GDCE 10: Guerilla talks Killzone 3, new IP for Sony 17 August 2010 at 6:10 am by Admin

GDCE 10: Guerilla talks Killzone 3, new IP for Sony screenshot

In a special GDC Europe keynote today, Guerilla’s Managing Director Harman Hulst talked about the was founded as a startup, how it worked with Sony, and the development process of the Killzone franchise. (He also used the above header — a Destructoid original — in a slide!)

He showed a video of the tech demo, featuring space marines, that it showed Sony in 1999; it didn’t look bad for a 1999. It impressed Sony and the rest, as they say, is history. He told the audience about how it were inspired by Nazi and Russian World War II military outfits and machines for Killzone’s Helghast soldiers, and that adding glowing eyes was great for bad guys because they always look evil.

It then found out about Jin-Roh — the Japanese anime featuring soldiers with glowing eyes — one year before the original Killzone launched. That little thing didn’t please Guerilla very much, but it stuck to their concept in what Hulst spun as the design being based on universal values. He seemed pretty honest, so he probably meant it… although as a Dutch guy I can, of course, never trust a Dutch guy.

Seriously though, he came across more as an old indie guy. He stressed how Guerilla’s transistion, from indie studio to Sony-published and then to Sony-owned allowed it to keep its culture. Interestingly enough, ex-Westwood hero Louis Castle had a talk earlier today about how you will always have to adapt after acquisition. But Hulst did create some confidence by talking about how it first looked at Gran Turismo developer Polyphony and Uncharted dev Naughty Dog and how they dealt with being owned by Sony.

On the Killzone side, he had some more interesting things to discuss. Guerilla apparently created a method, which he dubbed “top-down and bottom-up.” (He is so Dutch.) This method consisted of analyzing all reviews of Killzone 1, and “all forum posts,” which resulted in average scores, what was wrong about the first game, and what was good about it. It then took the top five best and worst elements and made it the objective to turn the worst five into highlights for Killzone 2. In a second analysis after Killzone 2’s release, it turned out that three awful aspects of Killzone 1 (AI, death animations and cover) were now seen as being great in Killzone 2

The studio did the same thing with Killzone 2, compiling a list of some of the game’s most negative aspects as perceived by gamers and critics. Although I couldn’t make out the entire sheet at a distance, one aspect that was badly received in Killzone 2 sprung out: Vehicular Combat. Suffice to say, it’s highly likely that this will be a main focus for Killzone 3. It would also easily fit into their more open terrain level design that is hinted at in the trailers. Another aspect was the lack of variety. This led Guerilla to conclude that there was a lack of focus on unique experiences. “Call of Killzone” anyone?

Finally, Hulst announced that Guerilla is starting up a new studio (in Amsterdam’s downtown area) which will develop an as-of-yet-unannounced new IP. They are hiring, so get on it.

How Killzone 3 will shape up is something we’ll be able to find out in the not too distant future, as Hulst says the studio is “going to put their creativity in the pressure cooker” and finish it really fast. The game is apparently already stable, except for “the occasional crash here and there.”

+ THQ announces uDraw and tablet peripheral for the Wii By Admin 17 August 2010 at 5:40 am and have No Comments

THQ announces uDraw and tablet peripheral for the Wii screenshot

In the sea of never ending peripherals, THQ goes ahead and introduces another thing to clutter our living rooms. uDraw GameTablet is the first-of-its-kind gaming accessory that you use to draw things. In other words, it makes the Wii like a DS now. Kind of. The tablet will be bundled with uDraw Studio for $69.99.

Unlike most new peripherals though (Tony Hawk: Ride anyone?), THQ plans to release more than just one game to use the tablet. Pictionary and Dood’s Big Adventure will both be released along uDraw this holiday season for $29.99 each. We can expect more games to make use of this device in 2011 as well.

THQ expects Europe and other territories to get all this sometime in 2011.

So yeah, this is a thing now. Surprised at how cheap the board actually is. Only question is will people actually want this? Check out the official website for more on uDraw.

Also, not to be hatin’ or anything, but the Sega Pico did this first.

+ Heavy Rain sold four times better than expected By Admin 17 August 2010 at 5:20 am and have No Comments

Heavy Rain sold four times better than expected screenshot

Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain wasn’t expected to be as successful as it was, according to creator David Cage. The wannabe film director has said that Heavy Rain was given a lowball sales estimate, but that the PS3 exclusive sold four times as many copies as anticipated.

The NPD claims the game sold around 400,000 copies in the US, which isn’t the world’s biggest success, but it surpassed Sony’s expectations. In Europe and Japan, the game became a big hit.

As much sh*t as I got for suggesting that the game was “good” and not “perfect”, I am glad that the title performed above expectations. At the very least, it demonstrates that not every game has to be an FPS or a casual dancing game in order to succeed, and hopefully publishers take note of that.

+ Preview: Moving my body to Dance Central By Admin 17 August 2010 at 5:00 am and have No Comments

Preview: Moving my body to Dance Central screenshot

Dancing games get a bad rap. Either they’re something like DanceDanceRevolution, or they are something like Just Dance. One is a hardcore score-based game which doesn’t ever look like real dancing, and one is a much easier motion controlled party game that… doesn’t really look that much like dance, either.

Harmonix is stepping up, and Dance Central is its attempt to make a respectable dancing game. To quote Alex Rigopoulos, CEO of Harmonix: “Stepping on mats or posing with handheld controllers just doesn’t capture the spirit of dance.” That’s a big goal, as not only is it selling this new IP, they are selling an entirely new gameplay experience.

Dance Central, love it or hate it it, has become one of the most anticipated games for Kinect. And why wouldn’t it? With Harmonix’s pedigree and the recent popularity of dancing games like Just Dance. After the original Guitar Hero and Rock Band redefined music games, it is clear that Harmonix is one of a very few developers that could make a game that “captures the spirit of dance.”

Dance Central (Xbox 360)
Developer: Harmonix
Publisher: MTV Games
To be released: November 4, 2010

The basics of Dance Central are this — characters on the screen do stuff, and you re-enact to it, with the assistance of flash cards indicating what move you need to perform. Pretty simple. That is until the game hands your ass back to you because you can’t keep up. With each of the songs having multiple difficulties, and a sort of training mode to make sure you know how to perform the routines, there’s a lot here to guide would-be dancers. Oddly, I had no problem with this at E3, but somehow with the bright lighting of an almost empty white room, I struggled performing any of the moves in thecorrect fashion. Hopefully this won’t be an issue when I have the device in my own house… or maybe I just suck.

That’s not to say I didn’t have a ton of fun. Far from it. Dance Central is a very enjoyable game, and to say otherwise is pretty silly. Sure, I might have to actually memorize routines to get any good, but once you’ve got a routine down, it’s hard to not feel pretty awesome about the performance. It’s just a bummer that the tech isn’t quite there to do some moves on the ground, or to interact with objects, but that’s how the cookie crumbles.

However, one area that perplexed gamers was the lack of multiplayer for the game. Talking with Dance Central’s Project Director, Kasson Crooker, about this very issue, he was clear that Kinect is capable of recognizing two players doing the routine. Unfortunately, what Kinect cannot offer is space. Already the device needs players from four to eight feet away, and Dance Central needs a lot of space. With two players performing the intense routines of the game, Crooker mentioned that players would be slamming into each other, and that to make it fit with two bodies, the routines would be weakened.

That’s not to stop multiple people from dancing at once. That’s actually something Harmonix wants. It’s just that with two graded dancers at once, things become much more complicated. But there is a multiplayer mode, though. It’s called Dance Battle and has players alternating between segments of a song. Players with the highest score win. It’s pretty simple, but the breaking up between players offers perfect opportunity for trash talking.

Another new addition announced by Harmonix is the calorie counter. Nothing wild here, but it does keep track of generally how many calories you’ve burned up in the process of dancing. It’s a nice bullet point for those who want Kinect to be the next big health device, but I doubt many people will care too much about it.

It’s a little too early to call Dance Central a system seller for Kinect. It does have a strikingly high level of polish, and while I struggled with the game, it looks like that was an issue on my part, not on the game. If  Harmonix can follow through with its goals of making a game that captures the spirit of dance, it could have the “it” casual game of 2010 this holiday.

+ 160GB PS3 announced, then hidden By Admin 17 August 2010 at 2:30 am and have No Comments

160GB PS3 announced, then hidden screenshot

GameStop appears to have jumped the gun and prematurely revealed a brand new PlayStation 3 SKU. The North American retailer boasted a page on its website that featured a “just announced” 160GB PS3 that was shipping immediately. The page was promptly pulled.

Sony has a gamescom press conference coming up, and it would appear that one of its major announcements has just been spilled. Looks like somebody at GamesStop got a little too eager with their clicking finger and set this live before its time, but don’t be surprised if this announcement is cemented a little later today.

There are also hints that a 320GB PS3 is on the way, but we’ll have to wait and see for that one.

+ GC 10: Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7 detailed By Admin 17 August 2010 at 12:30 am and have No Comments

GC 10: Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7 detailed screenshot

Microsoft has revealed what they’re doing with Xbox Live and Windows Phone 7 and it doesn’t look like they’re going to be half-assing things here. As the general manager of mobile gaming for MGS, Matt Booty, put it, “Windows Phone 7 is the launch of a major gaming platform for Microsoft.”

It’s easy to see Microsoft means business as the line-up is pretty huge. 60 games will be available when Windows Phone 7 is launched this Christmas, all listed below. More games are planned to be part of the launch portfolio and we can expect new titles every week after the new OS launches.

The games are a mix of stuff you’ve seen on the Apple and Android platforms, but there will be first-party developed exclusive titles as well, such as Halo: Waypoint and Crackdown 2.

This is being marketed as an extension of your Xbox Live experience so expect Avatars, friends, demos, Achievements, messaging and more. It should be pointed out that the press release states “turn-based” multiplayer instead of just regular multiplayer. Seems there won’t be real time multiplayer, at least not at launch anyway.

If you take a look at some of the screenshots Harmonix swung our way, and you look deep enough, you can see some heavy duty Pro mode action at play. With Pro Keys and Pro guitar, whoever is rocking that really knows their stuff. Do you think you can handle it? I don’t think I can handle it. I think my hands might cramp up. I think I’m a little sad now.
