Electronic Arts has announced a new title in the Battlefield series today, this one called Battlefield Play4Free. It's a PC title and to play it, it'll cost you exactly what you'd expect — nothing.
The game is said to be a "deep PC shooter featuring signature Battlefield vehicular warfare, sandbox gameplay, and intense 32-player online battles. They're currently accepting signs up for the closed beta on its website; those accepted will get a chance to start shooting at things at the end of November.

EA calls the game a combination of Battlefield 2 and Bad Company 2, with the most popular maps from the former and the classes and weapons of the latter. Expect some kind of link between Play4Free, Battlefield Heroes (which is also free to play) and the upcoming Battlefield 3.
What's the catch? Well, microtransactions of course, although EA is quiet on the specifics. But from what we can tell, the core experience won't cost you a cent, so that's the good news. Expect it to be go wide in spring of 2011.

What does two years, $1200, and a hell of a lot of talent get you? An impressive Half-Life-inspired fan film, called Beyond Black Mesa.
The trailer just made its debut online, and it's chock full of impressive special effects, slick action, and relentless Combine soldiers. Directed by Brian Curtin, the film focuses on a resistance fighter named Adrian Shephard who, along with others, is attempting to send out a warning of an impending invasion.
More details on the film can be found on its official website.

Some things are happening on Steam right now, and they might be relevant to your interests. First up, we've got a double shot of "free weekend" promos. Shattered Horizon and Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West are both free to try out from now until 1:00 PM PDT on Sunday. They're also on sale, too: $9.99 and $7.49, respectively.
What's more, a lovely selection of older Grand Theft Auto titles have been marked down. I'm not even going to break out the individual prices; just know that they're dirt cheap. Similarly, Supreme Commander 2 has also seen a slash in price. You can get it for roughly the amount it costs to order a man-sized meal at your fast food establishment of choice.
Finally — and you can thank me for pointing this out later — Farming Simulator 2011 is 17 percent off. Morbid curiosity might get the better of me on this one, guys. Sure was nice knowing you.
When you want to act really tough, what do you do? Do you drink a lot of whiskey and give yourself a tattoo with a rusty piece of barbed wire? Or do you run outside and knock down a tree with your bare hands? While both of those things are pretty manly, nothing can top the pure rush of testosterone you feel by being a guest on a late-night SPIKE show and talking about Kirby's Epic Yarn. F*CK YEAH! I can feel a giant beard growing out of my face just thinking about it!
In a few minutes, an episode of GameTrailers TV I was a guest on is going to air on SPIKE (1:10 a.m. EST). On it, I represent Destructoid by talking about what games are going to be hot this holiday season.
You can watch it if you like. I mean, I don't really care either way. I will probably skip it and just do push-ups on top of a hot naked lady. A hot naked lady who is also cooking me dinner and vacuuming my living room.
KIRBY'S EPIC YARN, BITCHES!
Make no mistake, I'm not being facetious when I say that this is the best news of today. Many of you who have touched Rock Band 3 will likely agree. For those who have not, know there's an Achievement on the Xbox 360 version for calibrating your system, a total necessity, and it's worth four Gamerscore points.
In order to balance out those four points so your running total doesn't end in a gross number, you need to earn a six-point Achievement for linking your account to RockBand.com. Sounds easy enough, right? Well, before now, you physically couldn't — that functionality wasn't enabled. But now it is! Rejoice!
Note: After linking my account, I had to restart Rock Band 3 for the action to take effect.
MTV Games and Harmonix have already released downloadable content for Dance Central, giving dancers the opportunity to add three more tracks to their 32 on-disc-setlist.
Now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace are three dance routines for Ne-Yo's "Because of You," Sean Paul's "Temperature," and "Lady Sovereign's "I Got You Dancing." Each track will cost you 240 MS Points a piece.
Wondering why the tracks cost more than Rock Band songs? Dance moves, silly! It's apparently more work to choreograph a dance number than it is to chart instrument parts for a song. Everyone knows they just randomly dump colored into a super program for that anyhow.

The competition for this year's Independent Games Festival is as fierce as ever. One entrant, Marvin's Mittens, caught my eye. In part because the developers reached out to me (tee-hee!), but also because I dig platformers quite a bit — especially ones that draw inspiration from Knytt.
Breakfall's intent is to release this as an Xbox LIVE Indie Game this winter with a possible simultaneous release on PC, or one "shortly thereafter." Designer Mike Keogh says that "atmosphere and sense of exploring the world" are the two big takeaways for Marvin's Mittens.
Those are the magic words right there.
It was leaked earlier this year, but now it's confirmed: Artificial Mind & Movement are developing a game based on the upcoming film, Rango.
It's called Rango: The Video Game (shocking), and will be published by Electronic Arts for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Nintendo DS. Inspired by the upcoming film (which features the voice of Johnny Depp), the game takes place in an Old West town called "Dirt, where players rob through a gritty, pint-sized Wild West filled with wild rides, off-color characters and frantic shoot-outs."
Rango: The Video Game hits next March, just in time for when the film hits theaters.

The intro to Harmonix's Dance Central is pretty cool. So cool, in fact, that I almost pulled footage of it myself to be all "Here, look at this!"
Well, good thing I decided to play the game instead, because MTV Games and Harmonix just released the intro themselves. It's good to be lazy.
Amusing side note, the file they sent out was named "Hammer Intro," a reference to the title's codename, "Hammer." Maybe they should have chanced the file name. Also, this opening kind of reminds me of the video for Timex Social Club's "Rumors," which is the most amazing song ever.
Dance Central was one of my favorite Kinect launch titles; check out my review for why I think you should shake your booty.
