Badass of the Month Club: Terry S. Taylor 25 November 2009 at 10:00 am by Admin

Time once more for the Badass of the Month Club, wherein the staff highlights a character or industry figure of noteworthy badassery.

American singer/songwriter Terry Scott Taylor is probably not a name that rings a bell to many people. Over the course of his extremely prolific musical career, he has formed and played with several bands. He has played several different types of music, from country to blues to rock. He has been praised for his songwriting for decades, a great deal of it based on the writings of his favorite authors and poets.

Not only that, but he’s one of the most badass videogame music composers ever!

He has done so much with music that the video game soundtracks he is responsible for are merely the tip of the iceberg. But is is an abnormally gigantic bit of glacier. Taylor is the man behind the strange music that fills the klay universe of The Neverhood and Skullmonkeys. Anyone who has played the games should be familiar with their wonderfully strange area themes. Anyone who hasn’t is missing out on a very unique auditory experience that is a prime example of what game music should be: an integral part of the game to which it belongs.

Taylor got mixed up in game music composition soon after he collaborated with Earthworm Jim creator Douglas TenNapel in the mid-90s, first commissioned to work on music for a cartoon (the ill-fated Project G.e.e.K.e.R.). TenNapel so admired and enjoyed Taylor’s wacky musical stylings that they continued to work together on several projects, a partnership that has continued even to this day. Out of it came soundtracks for The Neverhood, Skullmonkeys and Boombots.

The music of The Neverhood mainly consisted of Taylor strumming an acoustic guitar and mumbling to himself. This may not sound like anything that belongs in a video game, but his offbeat style fits the game’s world perfectly. A note in the CD booklet for Neverhood Songs perfectly describes the attitude towards vocals that these songs have: “Should you chose to sing along to any of the following songs, we wish you luck. You’re gonna need it.”

Fast forward to 3:20 for the amazing.

I feel sort of wrong to ever label the noise that comes from Taylor’s mouth as singing; his voice is another instrument, if anything. He can be heard mumbling, humming, whistling, coughing, or making horn noises even on tracks listed as having no vocals. In addition to guitar, the songs were backed up with horns, bass, percussion, and even a little bit of banjo plucking.

The budget for Skullmonkeys was much bigger than that of The Neverhood, which was very apparent in Taylor’s compositions. While he was still accompanied by the exact same band as he had for the previous game, what they produced had a much fuller sound. Tribal chanting and pounding drums were used in many of the songs to separate the sound of the Neverhood from that of Planet Idznak, the planet where Skullmonkeys takes place.

The most famous of Skullmonkeys‘ songs is most likely “The Lil’ Bonus Room”, which is regarded by many to be one of the most humorous pieces ever composed for a videogame. It is vastly different than the rest of the soundtrack, and a nod back to the more simplistic music of The Neverhood. It is also one of the only songs where Taylor sings clearly, giving listeners a little better insight on his lyrical prowess.

Some prefer the minimalistic style of The Neverhood’s soundtrack to the music of Skullmonkeys, but I feel that they’re apples and oranges. Taylor is a man who has worked with several different genres of music over the span of his career. While the first showed off his skills in folk and blues, the latter shifted more towards jazz and surf rock. Both are excellent works of art in their own respective ways.

Unfortunately, the last game he worked on, Boombots, was pretty bad in nearly every way. It marked the sad end of his career composing video game music. He still works on other projects with TenNapel, so theoretically, if he ever designed another video game, Taylor would likely have another shot to score a video game. We can only hope!

Regardless, his past works are immortalized in their badassery, and Terry Scott Taylor is a badass by more than association. He is a man who is extremely gifted, musically speaking. He has conquered several different musical genres, headed a plethora of bands, and has made his mark on American music history. He poured his musical prowess and personality into everything he has made, and though his game compositions are only a tiny fraction of the whole, they are some of the most unusual and memorable pieces in video game history.

I mean, just listen to that. It’s badass.

Now, some people could care less about music in games. They see it as simple background noise that can and should be easily replaced without taking anything away from the game. That’s something I never understood, personally; I think a game’s soundtrack is as much a part of the whole as its graphics and mechanics.

No games emphasize this point more than The Neverhood and Skullmonkeys, in my opinion. Terry’s weird music may not be everyone’s cup of tea on its own, but when it is heard where it was meant to be heard, it meshes with everything else to make the Neverhood universe a strange yet believable world. His music didn’t have to be sweeping and epic to be memorable, nor did it have to be a chiptune masterpiece to fit in. He just did what he’d always done, and his folky, oddball sound did its job.

Now that you know who he is and what he was responsible for, it should be blatantly obvious why he deserves a spot in Destructoid’s Badass of the Month Club. Honor him by going out and procuring a copy of The Neverhood or Skullmonkeys; heck, if you’re feeling adventurous and completely obscure, you can give Boombots a shot.

If you’ve already given the songs context by playing the games, you can try to find a copy of Imaginarium, the awesome CD that contains all of the music Taylor has ever composed for a videogame. Unfortunately, the album is quite rare, but there’s always Youtube.

P.S. – The whole reason I decided to write about Taylor this month was because I got distracted from finding a Thanksgiving related badass subject. How? The following song from The Neverhood:

+ This month in XBL: Games on Demand, Avatar clothes, more By Admin 08 September 2009 at 4:00 pm and have No Comments

This month in XBL: Games on Demand, Avatar clothes, more screenshot

What’s happening this month in the fascinating world of Xbox LIVE? A bunch of little things that perfectly add up to be enough material for a single press release. God bless the art of filler content.

In Avatar-related news, there are more outfits on the way: "original styles" from the 80’s (September 10), "urban culture" (the 17th), and Forza Motorsport 3-themed duds on the 24th.

Things get quite a bit more exciting when it comes to this month’s deals. The Deal of the Week games are Lode Runner on September 14, Pinball FX on the 21st, and then Guitar Hero World Tour’s top ten downloadable songs will be 50% off at some point during September.

And as for Games on Demand, the latest batch includes Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution (Sept. 8), FIFA Street 3 (the 15th), Shaun White Snowboarding (the 22nd), and lastly, there’s the first episode of Fable II, which releases on the 29th for absolutely free.

Like I said, nothing substantial, but as a group, this stuff almost seems noteworthy. Almost.

+ Okamiden to be revealed in next week’s Famitsu By Admin 27 August 2009 at 4:20 am and have No Comments

Okamiden to be revealed in next week's Famitsu screenshot

There have been rumblings as of late, regarding something called "Okamiden," which Siliconera first discovered upon poking through some of Capcom’s trademarks. The company was found to own the rights to the word, and the popular belief and/or hope is that it could be an Okami sequel. "OMG what else could it be!?" you might ask.

Well, thanks to 7-Eleven (of all places) we’re about to find out next week. Andriasang reports that the company’s e-commerce site shows a listing for the upcoming September 17th issue of Famitsu, (which hits newsstands on September 3rd), with the contents of said issue marked only as "Okamiden."

With Clover studios sadly out of the picture, it’s hard to jump right on this and declare that it absolutely must be a new Okami title, especially since the word "Okami" itself is not altogether uncommon. It sure would be nice though, wouldn’t it? Looks like we’ll find out for sure on Septmber 3rd, and we’ll let you know regardless.

+ Man steals Wi-Fi to play Halo in a library By Admin 27 August 2009 at 4:00 am and have No Comments

Man steals Wi-Fi to play Halo in a library screenshot

The above picture shows a genius. A criminal mastermind so brilliant it’s amazing that he was ever caught. Sitting in a library, with headphones on, a mysterious big bag under his desk, and a newspaper obscuring his hands, he just blends into the crowd, doesn’t he? You’d never guess he’d brought an Xbox into the building so he could steal Wi-Fi and play Halo. Oh wait, yes you would!

This man gets points for sheer audacity. He brought a monitor, Xbox, wireless router, external hard-drive and headset into the New York Library so that he could play his videogames like a cheeky bugger. For all his effort and gall, however, it didn’t take long before he was rumbled. Perhaps because he was actually screaming down his headset.

"He proceeded to play Quake/Halo/Call of Duty," says the chap who took the above photo. "Some nerd fighter game while yelling out instructions to his ‘teammates.’"

Apparently, it took him twenty minutes to set the equipment and game up. It took two minutes for him to be caught and kicked out. Fail.

+ BioShock 2 artist series now with more Penny Arcade By Admin 26 August 2009 at 6:00 pm and have No Comments

BioShock 2 artist series now with more Penny Arcade screenshot

The second installment of the BioShock 2 artist series is out and the new piece was created by Penny Arcade. You may have heard of them. They have this little comic series and some kind of big party around this time of the year every year in Seattle.

The piece is called Mr. Bubbles and you can grab a print of the new piece over at the BioShock 2 booth at PAX next week. There’s only a limited amount of prints though so you’ll have to be quick to get one.

The first piece in the artist series made by Jhonen Vasquez will also be made available again at PAX. Jhonen will be at the show doing signings and throwing acid at people’s faces for fun cause that’s just how Jhonen rolls.

+ New Serious Sam HD trailer is the best trailer ever By Admin 26 August 2009 at 5:00 pm and have No Comments

New Serious Sam HD trailer is the best trailer ever screenshot

The Serious Sam series is known for being really over the top. So what better way to promote the game than with a really over the top trailer? In fact, I’m going to go as far as saying that this is the best trailer for a game ever created yet.

Seriously. It’s like they got the people who made the Powerthrist ads and let them run wild on making this trailer. Don’t take my word for it. Just hit the break to find out for yourself!

+ iPhone title Football U now free on App Store By Admin 26 August 2009 at 3:30 pm and have No Comments

iPhone title Football U now free on App Store screenshot

Longtail Studios has announced that its iPhone/iPod Touch title, a 3D football game called Football U, is now available for free on the App Store.

Hey, what’s this? A sports story not written by our resident sports guy, Samit Sarkar? Well, here’s the deal — Football U isn’t your typical sports game. Longtail hooked me up with a copy a few weeks ago, and I was skeptical at first — I don’t really like football games. Or football.

But Football U surprised me with its off-the-wall story, and straightforward (and relatively fun) passing mechanic that requires zero sports knowledge. Which is good, because I have none. Also, did I mention that it’s now free? What do you have to lose?

+ Raven suffers ‘unprecedented’ layoffs following Wolfenstein By Admin 26 August 2009 at 3:00 pm and have No Comments

Raven suffers 'unprecedented' layoffs following Wolfenstein screenshot

Raven Software appeared to be having a good year, releasing two wildly popular games in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Wolfenstein. Despite this, however, it’s recently been revealed that the studio has suffered significant layoffs in what’s being called an "unprecedented" cull.

"With the recent completion of both Wolverine, based on the summer blockbuster movie, and Wolfenstein, the next chapter of the famed franchise, Raven Software is slightly reducing its workforce to better reflect the studios upcoming slate," confirms the studio in an official statement.

The firings are said to have affected all areas of the company, and a figure of 56 members of the 180-strong workforce has been suggested. Severence packages are allegedly being offered to those who have lost their jobs.

I really didn’t expect this. X-Men Origins did rather well, and Wolfenstein may not have set the world on fire, but it’s doing alright, getting up to number two in the UK charts. Interestingly, Endrant Studios worked on the awful multiplayer for Wolfenstein and also suffered layoffs after it released. Perhaps the game has a Nazi curse?

It's finally time to ascend: Cursed Mountain launch trailer screenshot

After what seemed to this survival horror fan like a long wait, Deep Silver’s Cursed Mountain has finally come to retail shelves and is ready to up the creep factor of your time spent with the Wii. There’s also a new launch trailer after the jump, which may or may not aid your decision in purchasing this title, but hey, you may as well go watch it. You’re here already, right?

Destructoid’s review of the game is coming soon, but while you wait you can refer back to my quick and dirty hands on time with the game at E3 or our interview with Deep Silver developer Martin Filipp. Are you thinking you might pick this one up, or are you holding off for your horror needs until Silent Hill: Shattered Memories comes out?

+ Gabe Newell is a sexy Victoria’s Secret girl By Admin 26 August 2009 at 2:20 pm and have No Comments

Gabe Newell is a sexy Victoria's Secret girl screenshot

Victoria’s Secret, popular purveyor of underwear, is holding a "Body" contest where lovely young ladies can tell the world why they feel beautiful in order to win a free vacation. What does this have to do with videogames? It has everything to do with videogames, because Valve boss Gabe Newell entered and is doing quite well!

Of course, Newell didn’t strictly enter himself. It seems a cruel/glorious prankster has signed him up and got his friends to vote for the sexual baron. Victoria’s Secret removed the entry, but it appears to have returned, and has amassed a staggering 32394 votes. Well, it’s 32395, now that I’ve voted.

"I love my body. I don’t let anyone get me down about it," reads Gabe’s entry. "If someone says a hurtful comment, I just push it back."

A powerful message for a serious age, I think. So far, the highest position Gabe’s managed is #2, meaning he has a solid chance at winning this contest. Let’s see if we can get him to first place!
