+ GC 10: Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7 detailed By Admin 17 August 2010 at 12:30 am and have No Comments

GC 10: Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7 detailed screenshot

Microsoft has revealed what they’re doing with Xbox Live and Windows Phone 7 and it doesn’t look like they’re going to be half-assing things here. As the general manager of mobile gaming for MGS, Matt Booty, put it, “Windows Phone 7 is the launch of a major gaming platform for Microsoft.”

It’s easy to see Microsoft means business as the line-up is pretty huge. 60 games will be available when Windows Phone 7 is launched this Christmas, all listed below. More games are planned to be part of the launch portfolio and we can expect new titles every week after the new OS launches.

The games are a mix of stuff you’ve seen on the Apple and Android platforms, but there will be first-party developed exclusive titles as well, such as Halo: Waypoint and Crackdown 2.

This is being marketed as an extension of your Xbox Live experience so expect Avatars, friends, demos, Achievements, messaging and more. It should be pointed out that the press release states “turn-based” multiplayer instead of just regular multiplayer. Seems there won’t be real time multiplayer, at least not at launch anyway.

Apple, Android and now Microsoft have finally stepped up their game in the mobile war. Which of these three platform are you backing?

+ Hands-on: Final Fantasy XIV By Admin 16 August 2010 at 5:00 pm and have No Comments

Hands-on: Final Fantasy XIV screenshot

Final Fantasy XIV doesn’t exactly have a lot to prove. It has a ton to prove, for not only does it need to make itself a true competitor to in a market of MMOs, it also needs to prove to a lot of fans that Final Fantasy, the MMO, can be done right.

And it’s not that Final Fantasy XI was a bad game. Far from it! It’s just that Final Fantasy XI was such a difficult game, with a huge barrier to entry. It was brutally difficult at times, and the level scaling was outstanding. And don’t mention the epic boss battles that would take 14 hours to defeat. As Quare Enix’s last entry to the MMO market, it was good, but not great. Final Fantasy XIV is then a sort of reboot, so we’ll see if Square Enix recognized many of these initial faults, and applied them to the next. Finger’s crossed they have learned their lessons.

Final Fantasy XIV (PC)
Developer: Square Enix
Publisher: Square Enix
To be released: September 30, 2010

Starting things off, the representatives from Square Enix wanted to show off some of the new intro areas of the game, as well as the create-a-character. I went over to create a couple of characters and see what I could go for. When building a character, players will have five playable races, the humanesque Hyur, the elven Elezen, the cute dumpy Lalafell, the hulk-like Reodagyn and the cat-girl race of Miqo’te.

Each of these races are typically broken into two different regional types as well. For example, in the Hyur race, players can choose from the more metropolitan Midlanders, with both males and females, or they can choose from the Highlander clan, who are bulkier and can only be men. It’s an interesting choice, forcing players to choose a clan identity for all of these races, and it offers a lot with regards to the aesthetic choices of the characters as well.

It is pretty easy to make a character that is distinct and unique. Unfortunately, the options for changing each character can be a little sparse, and some of them, such as the hair for the male classes, border on a little too frothy and braided. Oh well. However, the job classes will change the look of your character from the get go, so if you want a distinct looking character, having the right class associated is the quickest way about that.

The whole class system is pretty interesting, evoking many older Final Fantasy games. Players have four Disciplines to choose from, known as Disciples of War, Disciples of Magic, Disciples of the Land, and Disciples of the Hand. Under each of these disciplines are a number of classes, such as Gladiator or Lancer under the Disciple of War, or Fisher under Disciple of the Land. While smart players would not choose to be a Weaver or a Culinarian as their character’s first class, it is very easy to change jobs. With the switch of a weapon, the character’s class will change, and all the skills learned with that class will be available.

As for gameplay, I was shown three separate areas, two of them opening areas for low level play. The first was the forest city of Gridania. I was rolling “Bigg Dude”, a pale green colored Roegadyn blacksmith who was wondering along in the forest when a dark explosion went forth in the sky. Running ahead he finds a blistery little Lalafell and a slightly scandalously dressed blind Hyun girl. After a fight with some wolves (my blacksmith sucked), we were chased by a giant tree and saved by a troop of singing moogles and a boy with horns on his head. For the next hour I found out that the forest elementals did not like me, and that I needed to be cleansed. I also found out that the blacksmith class is a terrible class to start out with, and that I was screwed.

So when we were shown the next area opening area, the desert city of Ul’dah, I decided to make a buzz-cut Highlander Hyur Pugilist. Right from the get go, there was a lot more people to interact with and chat with, and like Giridania, there was some explosions in the sky. This time, however, the explosion resulted in the escape of a gnarly monster during a big parade. My Pugilist was much better prepared to deal with enemies I fought (seriously, squirrels were killing my Roegadyn), and overall, I found this city to be much more interesting to explore than the quiet forest of Girdania.

Finally, we were shown some of the higher level instances with a group of people. We may have had about 16 players running off in a troop. With a troop leader choosing out instance then sending out an invite, we were off killing high level bugs and monsters in no time. While many players complained that Final Fantasy XI struggled with the difficulty scaling, we seemed to have no problem dealing with the problems of these foes.

One of the most exciting areas of the game was the aesthetics. The game is a lovely looking title, and there is some really strong musical and design elements at play. Of course, considering this is Square Enix, one can almost guarantee that this will be one of the best areas of the game.

Final Fantasy XIV still has a month to go, but there were a couple things that concerned me. The basic UI and interaction with NPCs and players alike felt like more of a chore than it should be. Also, if you decide to play some of the non-violent classes, you are basically screwed unless someone gives you a weapon to change class. Of course, this is a brand new MMO, so there is going to need for some balancing and patches, so I hope whatever those are Square Enix can crank those out ASAP. Thankfully, the really strong production values really shine, and it looks like this could be a great starting over point for players who were interested in Final Fantasy XI, but turned off by the high barrier of entry. One hopes everything will come together by September 30 when Final Fantasy XIV launches.

+ Mod: Portable Dreamcast with built-in VMU! By Admin 16 August 2010 at 4:00 pm and have No Comments

Mod: Portable Dreamcast with built-in VMU! screenshot

A portable Dreamcast is already the stuff that dreams (see what I did there?) are made of, but adding in a VMU unit is liking icing on this little cupcake of a game system. No, it’s not just a VMU slot, though it does include one. This is an actual functioning Virtual Memory Unit, little screen, buttons and all, built right into the face of this mod.

Techknott is now on his third iteration of portable Dreamcast, and his experience shows with the latest model. There’s a PSOne display, CD drive, SD card slot, AV outputs and actual Dreamcast controls.

Get a better look at Techknott’s handywork in the above video.

+ Hey Europeans, Front Mission 3 is coming to PSN By Admin 16 August 2010 at 2:17 pm and have No Comments

Hey Europeans, Front Mission 3 is coming to PSN screenshot

If you’ve been busy hating on Front Mission Evolved for not being a turn-based strategy game, and have the good fortune to be living in Europe (or have a PAL PlayStation Network account), then you’re in luck, because Square Enix is rereleasing Front Mission 3 to the European PlayStation store, the better to wax nostalgic about those halcyon days of action points and tiles and pressing “End” on the menu a bunch.

Said Larry Sparks of Square Enix Europe:

With the forthcoming release of Front Mission Evolved, the Front Mission series is back with a bang. Before the evolution of the series, we think it’s the perfect time to revisit a previous classic installment with Front Mission 3. We’re very pleased to be able to bring this compelling title to the PlayStation Network.

Be pleased, then, because the game that started it all (for most westerners) is now available to all (Europeans). Then again, some might not be so pleased, as a few long-time Front Mission-aries (heh) blame Front Mission 3 for Front Mission 4’s lukewarm critical reception and poor sales, which in turn killed off a Front Mission 5 overseas release. But that’s a whole other chain of hatred. For now, just pick this up and combo Knuckles with a Shotgun. Do it.

+ Nintendo DLC: Divergent Shift, Space Trek and more By Admin 16 August 2010 at 12:20 pm and have No Comments

The one game you want to give special attention to this week is Divergent Shift. The title — originally called Reflection — has been in development for a long time but it’s finally out for DSiWare this week. It offers a really unique gameplay style and reminds me of what Metroid Dread would had that ever been a real thing.

WiiWare

DSiWare

  • Divergent Shift (Konami Digital Entertainment, 1 player, 800 DSi Points)
  • 3D Mahjog (cosmigo, 1 player, 500 DSi Points)
  • myNotebook: Carbon (Nnooo, 1 player, 500 DSi Points
  • Just SING! National Anthems (Engine Software, 1 player, 200 DSi Points)

Worth noting is that myNotebook: Carbon is developed by Nnooo. Nnooo is exactly what everyone will say when they see the game in the DSiWare store.

+ Final Fantasy VI opera upscaled, upgraded, incredible By Admin 16 August 2010 at 12:00 pm and have No Comments

Final Fantasy VI opera upscaled, upgraded, incredible screenshot

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the Final Fantasy VI opera scene performed live at the Distant Worlds concerts. It’s a thrill every time, because it always brings back the feeling I had when I first witnessed/heard the videogame masterpiece.

Seeing this work from Eliot Hagen does a similar job. He gave the opera a huge upgrade. First off, upscaled and reanimated the original scene to 1080p resolution and a 19:6 aspect ratio. Then he replaced the original 16-bit score with a performance by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

This is so good that I think Square Enix would be proud. I know composer Nobuo Uematsu would be proud. With Square Enix’s permission, I think Dear Friends should use this video with their performance.

Hats off to Hagen. This is brilliant.

Be sure to click the video and watch it on YouTube in 1080p for full effect.

Red Faction: Battlegrounds gets a trailer, screens screenshot

THQ revealed earlier today Red Faction: Battlegrounds for the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. Battlegrounds is a multiplayer-focused vehicular combat game where tanks and mechs square off on the surface of Mars.

Four players can play online or locally in the game’s Survival, Annihilate and Flag Frenzy modes. And as this is a Red Faction game, there will be plenty of destructible buildings for you to demolish. Players will also be rewarded with bonus content such as maps, vehicles, weapons and other items that will be playable in Red Faction: Armageddon.

Red Faction: Battlegrounds will be out in 2011.

+ Let’s watch some Halo: Reach multiplayer videos! By Admin 16 August 2010 at 11:20 am and have No Comments

Let's watch some Halo: Reach multiplayer videos! screenshot

Halo Waypoint released a few videos over the weekend showing off some multiplayer matches in three brand new maps for Halo: Reach. Above is Pinnacle, a remake of Ascension. The hologram armor ability is shown off as well.

You can find a couple more multiplayer matches below the fold. One of Reflection, a remake of Ivory Tower and Zealot. Of the three maps, I really like Zealot the most. Was never a fan of Ivory Tower from Halo 2. Also, what was it about the Ascension map that made everyone crave the sniper spot, even when it was at the worst times possible?

Zealot
