Sweaty nerd sex orgy planned for PAX Prime 27 August 2010 at 4:00 am by Admin

Sweaty nerd sex orgy planned for PAX Prime screenshot

This is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. What must be an incredibly lonely man has put an ad up on Craigslist looking for people interested in a “Nerd Orgy” at PAX Prime.

“Okay, I thought it might be fun for a bunch of us like minded adults to get together in a hotel room and have a friendly adult party,” writes the anonymous sex fan. “This will be Friday night, with a possibility of a Saturday encore. Any who are interested please email me so we can get this set up. All sizes and shapes welcome! Please respond with either geek or nerd in the subject line. MW4MW MW4W .”

Of course, our shortsighted friend has already stumbled upon the one flaw in his plan: “Update: Getting too many responses from single males, so will not be accepting any more for now. If you are a single male and you already replied, I need to see what we have for couples and single females before you get an invite. No single males have an actual invite yet.”

Seriously, was he expecting Felicia Day and Olivia Munn to be all up in that shit? Was he even expecting more than one female to sign up? We salute you, naive fool who tried to start an orgy at PAX and was surprised when only men turned up.

At least now we know where the obligatory PAX Flu epidemic will start.

+ Brilliant: Wii Party comes bundled with a Wii Remote By Admin 27 August 2010 at 3:40 am and have No Comments

Brilliant: Wii Party comes bundled with a Wii Remote screenshot

Today Nintendo has announced that its upcoming Wii party title, cleverly called Wii Party, will ship with a Wii Remote. Yes, every copy of the game will come with an accessory that, alone, would cost you $39.99 on its own, will come bundled with a $49.99 game.

This is rather brilliant on Nintendo’s party, really — games like Wii Play and Wii Sports Resort were among the top selling titles of 2009, arguably due to the fact that they came bundled with a required accessories. It’s also a great deal, even if you intend on throwing the game in the trash after a few days. That’s not to say that Wii Party won’t be quality entertainment, with 13 game modes like Bingo, Friend Connection, and Globe Trot.

Wii Party is out in North America on October 3 and Europe on October 8.

If there isn’t an award for “Most Entertaining Videogame to Watch,” there should be. Marvel vs. Capcom 3 would be my definitive pick, even (especially?) as a longtime not-fighting-game guy. Hell, GamesRadar even gave it their coveted “Most Graphics” award. I’m not joking.

The above video shows Amaterasu’s level 3 hyper, while the video below shows Super Skrull’s. I’m not entirely sure what’s happening beyond that, but this footage does bring me back to the good versus-themed times that were had at EVO 2010.

+ Hands-on: Drawn: Dark Flight By Admin 26 August 2010 at 1:30 pm and have No Comments

Hands-on: Drawn: Dark Flight screenshot

Big Fish Games isn’t exactly a household name. After all, each of their titles are casual games that don’t receive much attention, but seem to do just fine for the company. And considering, as they claim, that they launch a new title every day, there is something impressive going on at this little company. They aim to be — to quote designer Chris Campbell — “a leader in casual games.”

Which brings us to Drawn: Dark Flight. Here is an adventure game sequel to a title that most don’t know about, a point-and-click adventure game for the PC. The original Drawn was a pretty little casual title, and the team behind this sequel, made up of developers from Nintendo’s Treehouse and more, hope to make this one of the best casual titles around.

There’s actually quite a bit to like about this game. See why that is below.

Drawn: Dark Flight (PC)
Developer: Big Fish Games
Publisher: Big Fish Games
To be released: August 31, 2010

Drawn: Dark Flight picks right up after the plot of the first title. You have just descended a tower in a kingdom taken over by a dark force, and the game picks up in this city. The darkness has become more pronounced here in the streets, and your job will be to solve puzzles to reach your young queen Iris, with the ultimate goal to take back the kingdom and save the day.

When shown to me, the devs kept saying that Dark Flight was more like a “hidden object” game than an adventure title, as most of the activity boils down to going through screens, clicking on somewhat hidden objects, and placing them somewhere else.

However, like most adventure games, these items have to be placed in rather unique and odd places, so the puzzles promise to be pretty complex. That said, this is a casual title, so there’s plenty of help and assistance with completing the game. Big Fish Games really wants to make a game people can complete.

Now, polish is really where devs have striven to place their effort on Dark Flight. The child queen, Iris, has a special ability that allows her drawings and creations to come to life, so throughout the adventure puzzles will involve interacting with pieces of art inside and outside the actual pieces themselves.

For example, one lush painting of a self-aware Easter Island monolith is depressed, for stormy weather in his painting means he cannot receive a letter from his beloved. Using some cranks outside the painting activate a fan that will blow the clouds away.

Once back in the painting, we receive the letter with another image of a pirate. This animated painting, designed to look like cardboard cut-outs, was a puzzle involving shooting sharks with cannon balls before reaching his treasure. It’s a neat effect, with puzzles within puzzles, and these puzzles take place all across the game. Other puzzles entail finishing drawings of objects, like a line of rope, to make them become real and useful in your journey.

It’s the visuals that are most impressive. While the main city streets are creepily pretty, with a hand drawn and painted aesthetic, it’s when you get paintings and drawings that dynamism becomes a big deal. Considering all of their options for artistic opportunities, we’ve got paintings, drawings, pop-up books, cut-outs, sketches, and plenty more art styles to work through. Having such a varied aesthetic fits the style of the game and allows for lots of flexibility for the designers.

Dark Flight looks like a pretty little casual title. There is an extremely high level of polish here, and fans of point-and-click adventures will certainly want to pay attention to Drawn: Dark Flight. Coming in a $9.99 special edition and a $19.99 collector’s edition (with 2 hours of extra gameplay), there are a couple different buying options for players.

Drawn: Dark Flight will be available on August 31.

+ Valve talks canceled ‘flying fairy’ RPG By Admin 26 August 2010 at 12:40 pm and have No Comments

Valve talks canceled 'flying fairy' RPG screenshot

Wait, what? Prior to Left 4 Dead, Valve was working on a prototype for a “flying fairy game.” In an interview with PC Gamer, Gabe Newell and other leading men at Valve spilled the details.

“That was a useful failure to us, because it was so clearly dumb that it made us say, ‘OK, what are we actually good at that we can do instead?’”

“It was so bad,” Gabe explains, “you wanted to ask yourself: ‘How could we make a game that was this bad? And how should we make a game?’ And we said we should focus on what we do really well, so why are we doing this game which was kind of a … it wasn’t really an RPG … it was this action fantasy sort of role playing game that had no story.”

“And then we said ‘OK, that’s so horribly wrong. What we should focus in on is AI and playing in co-op, and that’s the interesting opportunity.’ That was where Left 4 Dead came from.” The more you know!

The whole “CivAnon” support group is a clever marketing tool, but part of me wishes it actually existed, because we all know there really are people who suffer from one-more-turn-itis. If you are one of those troubled individuals, listen up — this contest might be up your alley.

2K Games is asking Civilization addicts to submit their stories with a video. Share your tale of misery, and you could win $2,500 and a framed, limited edition Civilization Anonymous poster signed by Firaxis Games. Second and third place get just the signed poster.

The deadline for submissions is September 8, so you’ve got plenty of time to prepare.

+ ESRB text for Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage is rad By Admin 26 August 2010 at 11:20 am and have No Comments

ESRB text for Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage is rad screenshot

We already know that upcoming game Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage is hilarious. I’m already jazzed for this ridiculous game, and I’m sure you are too. The newly listed ESRB summary for the Xbox 360 and PS3 title does it justice, as you’ll see here:

Players have the ability to use Kenshiro’s signature move on enemies—a flurry of intense punches that triggers a breakdown of internal organs and death.

Nice. It goes on to say that gang members react to damage by screaming in pain and flailing or flinging back. And it gets better:

Some female characters wear revealing outfits that expose large portions of cleavage and buttocks. In one sequence, a female character (viewed from behind) crawls slowly on the ground in a thong-like outfit.

That goes right along with how Jim told us that female character Mamiya’s special ability of crawling through holes exists solely so that you can look up her skirt. They’re probably talking about the same thing.

So, E10 rating? Kidding.

Can’t wait.

+ PS3 Move Champion Pack looks lulzy By Admin 26 August 2010 at 6:20 am and have No Comments

PS3 Move Champion Pack looks lulzy screenshot

We stumbled across the PS3 Move Champion Pack from Interworks Unlimited on GameStop’s webpage. Interworks Unlimited is no stranger to the console accessory business, but their previous products have mostly been cases, lightguns, and standard controllers. Given the apparent success of all those Wii accessories you thought no one ever bought, it appears they’re branching out into the motion control world.

For $29.99 (or $24.99 at Amazon!) you get this bundle that is focused for use with the Sony Sports Champions bundle. It comes with a Move Bow controller, Move Sword and Shield, and a paddle for the table tennis Move game.

I was going to say that no one — ever — would buy this bundle, but I scrolled down on Amazon and saw that 13 percent of customers that viewed the page purchased the Move Champion Pack.

Jesus.

I’m going to start making my own motion control accessories.

+ Sony: We’ll always need physical media By Admin 26 August 2010 at 3:40 am and have No Comments

Sony: We'll always need physical media screenshot

PlayStation brand boss Kaz Hirai has given us a grounded look at the digital distribution scene, claiming that it’s extremist to believe that we’ll have an all-digital industry even within ten years. The polygonal executive has also stated that, whatever happens, the PlayStation 4 will need some form of physical media support.

“We do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn’t as robust as one would hope,” states Hirai. “There’s always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium.

“To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even ten years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme.”

It speaks of the naivety and almost childish lack of restraint that many game executives have that they believe digital distribution will happen overnight. The same thing happens with 3D gaming. A new idea comes along and these industry folk expect it to suddenly change everything and be the “future” of gaming. It may well be the future, but that doesn’t mean it’ll happen next week.

+ This is how GameStop will tackle digital distribution By Admin 24 August 2010 at 12:00 pm and have No Comments

This is how GameStop will tackle digital distribution screenshot

With an increasingly strong push toward download-only games and digital expansion packs, you have to wonder what’s going to happen to retailers like GameStop. Used game sales can only carry you so far into the future, right? VentureBeat has a neat article detailing the company’s model “store of the future.”

Essentially, GameStop wants to bring digital distribution into the storefront. Yeah, I know. There will be interactive kiosks that can scan in your personal rewards card to bring up information such as the games you’ve bought, your wishlist, and other things of that nature.

Additionally, these will display any rewards you’ve obtained by way of shopping (achievements!), and allow you to purchase stuff like game add-ons — you’ll get a code that can be redeemed at home, through your console. It’s a start, I guess.

And by that I mean the system will likely “work” on many people, but not you, and certainly not me.
