E3 10: Nintendo 3DS getting a crapton of powerhouse games 15 June 2010 at 7:30 am by Admin

So…the Nintendo 3DS. Biggest news of the Nintendo presser, perhaps even the biggest news of E3.

But what about the games? We know that the big N has some of the strongest first-party brands anyone could ask for, but it seems that the 3DS is going to have a full slate of real heavy third-party support.

Expect some really huge games on the platform, including a Metal Gear title from Konami, a Kingdom Hearts game from Square Enix, music titles from Activision, something from Harmonix, an Assassin’s Creed game from Ubisoft, and even an all-new Resident Evil game from Capcom.

Hell, even THQ was listed as a publisher, right alongside a Saints Row logo.

This little portable looks to be going off big.

+ E3 10: Preview: Sonic 4: Episode 1 By Admin 15 June 2010 at 7:00 am and have No Comments

E3 10: Preview: Sonic 4: Episode 1 screenshot

It’s old-school Sonic, but with a resolution bump. What do you want from me?

I’m kidding. Sega put a bit more work into it than that. Honestly, walking up to my demo station with the game running was pretty exciting. It may sound cheesy, but seeing Sonic 4 in action instantly brought me back to cracking into my Christmas Day Sega Genesis and playing through the first game with my brother in one sitting. I remember the feeling of finally acquiring each of the sequels later, and then playing through them so enthusiastically that I would find myself mocking “Nintendo kids” for no reason.

Just from looks alone, Sonic 4 brings back that old Sega pride. But how does it play?

Read on for our preview of Sonic 4.

As you might have heard, Sonic 4 is a true numbered sequel to the original Sega Genesis games, and Sega has spared no expense to make it as true to the original trilogy as possible. They told us how they’ve gone back multiple times to touch up what they originally thought was great. Even small things like recovery animations and speed up times have been adjusted to make this game as true to the old days as possible.

This works out to a Sonic game that feels just like the old ones. Watching the game before playing had me concerned that it wouldn’t, but when I finally got my hands on it, it felt good. It felt familiar. While Sonic’s jumping spin animation looks slow, its functionality isn’t. His left-to-right movement seems to move exactly where I point him, and landing on targets, bumpers, and over spikes is just as intuitive as it used to be on my trusty Genesis pad.

I played through four levels that looked a lot like Sonic the Hedgehog’s first level, Green Hill Zone. I actually made my way through a couple of the levels twice, opting to take a different pathway the second time around. The level design is classic, and has that feeling that makes you want to explore them a couple of times, and then work through them to find the fastest way through later. The loops and tracks are just as fun as they always were. I found that I had a constant, underlying fear that the game would jump into 3D control at any time, but thankfully it never did.

Sega doesn’t try to pull a fast one on us by throwing in something new and unnecessary, but there is one addition that proves to be useful. A new jumping attack has you stringing bounces on top of enemies that are automatically targeted with a marker. It’s pretty fun to zip across the heads of various enemies and objects with this. In some areas you’ll need this fast auto-switching attack to make your way across ravines and over obstacles. Know that this is a subtle addition and not some bold new gameplay concept. It really does fit nicely in with Sonic’s classic move set.

I finally made my way through all the stages and into a classic Eggman boss battle. The dodge-and-jump concept is back, but there was really nothing new here. I did nitpick to Sega that you couldn’t get in some fun extra hits in the pre-battle animation like you could in the old games. They looked at me as if to say, “Really?”

The presentation is quite nice in Sonic 4. I think that if you took the design philosophy of the original games and use them in the current technical environment, the end result would be a lot like what Sonic 4 appears to be. The visuals are very vibrant. They still have that rendered-3D-on-a-2D-plane look, but this time they’re actually 3D, and the game looks that much better for it. The game sticks to bright greens and blues, but with the graphical horsepower of the PS3 and Xbox 360 cranking those colors out, Sonic 4 looks like how you would always dream the next numbered sequel would look. There are some nice sparkling water effects and some neat blurs and animations, but the game really stays true to its roots and doesn’t try to do anything crazy or off-the-wall. The only issue you may have is with how smooth Sonic’s animations are. But, once you get over that, you’ll likely agree that he’s never looked better!

I really dig the retro touch in the musical score. The music is classic Sonic, as they brought the original composer back to do Sonic 4’s score. It sounds like it’s played back with 16-bit synthesizers, but this time with CD-quality audio. This is a nice parallel to the game’s visuals, which look like the old games, but have also been improved with technology at the same time. Overall, from what I heard, the music is fun, and very true to the original scores. There’s new “invincible” music, and it’s quite cute.

If you’re worried about Sonic 4 being true to the old formula, don’t be. Sega has worked so hard to make the experience line up nicely with your memories of the “good Sonic,” and it really shows. It’s the game that I knew Sega could do. The old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” has never seemed more true. Congratulations, Sega. You’ve made another good Sonic game.

+ E3 10: Kirby’s Epic Yarn is the cutest thing EVER By Admin 15 June 2010 at 6:53 am and have No Comments

E3 10: Kirby's Epic Yarn is the cutest thing EVER screenshot

Kirby’s Epic Yarn was just announced at Nintendo’s press conference. It’s the first home console Kirby game in quite a while, and as such, the little pink puffball is coming back in an all-new, ridiculously cute style.

In the footage shown, Kirby was able to whip background objects like zippers and scrunch up the world. He was also able to transform into weird objects like a tank, a spaceship, and even a dolphin. It all looked very cool, and almost unbelievable; the simplistic design looked real, almost.

Look for Kirby’s Epic Yarn this fall exclusively on Wii.

+ E3 10: Golden Sun: Dark Dawn rises this holiday By Admin 15 June 2010 at 6:43 am and have No Comments

E3 10: Golden Sun: Dark Dawn rises this holiday screenshot

Golden Sun was one of the best JRPGs for the Game Boy Advance, and a pretty great one all around. And now there’s a Golden Sun game for the DS, newly subtitled as Golden Sun: Dark Dawn.

It’s pretty impressive from what’s seen so far, and also a little bit traditional. Turn-based combat, towns, dungeons, and all those things people thought modern JRPGs were trying their best to kill off. There’s a cool cell-shaded look about the whole thing, as well as some obligatory touch mechanics for puzzle-solving.

Expect to see it this holiday!

+ E3 10: Disney Epic Mickey is a total jizz festival By Admin 15 June 2010 at 6:40 am and have No Comments

E3 10: Disney Epic Mickey is a total jizz festival screenshot

Yeah, so, we just saw a presentation at the Nintendo E3 press conference that Nintendo is holding right now for Disney Epic Mickey, and let me tell you: you are so not ready. SO. NOT. READY. Described as a mix of adventure, platforming and RPG, this sounds like the game that I’ve been waiting for for YEARS.

We learned a bit more about how players can erase characters and surroundings, which can affect character behavior and possibly limit what they will tell you to help you out. We also got a look at the stage that’s base don the classic Disney cartoon Steamboat Willie, which I pretty much lost my mind over. Check out the gallery for more screens from this upcoming title. We’ll be bringing you impressions as soon as we can lay hands on it on the show floor as well, so make sure you keep an eye on us for that!

+ E3 10: GoldenEye announced as Wii exclusive By Admin 15 June 2010 at 6:33 am and have No Comments

E3 10: GoldenEye announced as Wii exclusive screenshot

BOND!

You can go back and hate on GoldenEye all you want, but the game brought us something amazing. Now it’s coming back on the Wii and it appears to have been revamped, but not entirely changed. The most obvious difference is probably the fact that Daniel Craig has taken the place of Pierce Brosnan, but it does look like the graphics have been updated and new levels and characters are involved.

More importantly, however, is the fact that split screen multiplayer is back. While the game does support online gaming who the hell wants to play GoldenEye like that? 16 multiplayer modes are going to be featured, including “paintball,” “melee” and “You Only Live Twice.” For me this is far better than a download only version of the game as we seem to be getting a solid amount of extra content and an update to a classic game instead of just a port.

Plus, I know you all got shivers the second the bathroom air vent kill popped up on screen.

GoldenEye 007 will land this holiday.

+ Microsoft trying to bring iPhone games to Windows Phone 7 By Admin 15 June 2010 at 4:00 am and have No Comments

Microsoft trying to bring iPhone games to Windows Phone 7 screenshot

So far, we haven’t really heard much about iPhone gaming at E3 — the focus has mainly been on the consoles and the PC. That doesn’t mean, however, that people have forgotten about Apple or mobile gaming.

Microsoft is very interesting in trying to horn in on that market, and their latest move shows they’re fairly serious about it. According to Pocket Gamer, Microsoft is now offering iPhone developers up-front cash to port their iPhone games to the new Windows Phone 7s. Unfortunately for Microsoft, developers appear to be declining the offer — there’s too much work involved in recoding the games into Silverlight or XNA framework.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft ups the ante. Do you think the Windows Phone 7 will be able to take on the iPhone, or is Microsoft just wasting money on a futile endeavor?

+ E3 10: This year’s Summer of Arcade deserves a montage By Admin 15 June 2010 at 3:40 am and have No Comments

E3 10: This year's Summer of Arcade deserves a montage screenshot

Every year, we get a new batch of “Summer of Arcade” Xbox LIVE Arcade games. And every year, we complain about how the prices have steadily gone up. Well, this year is no different, and I mean that in the nicest possible way — all five games are $15 a piece, no joke.

However, I don’t really feel like b*tching; not this time. Seemingly all of these XBLA titles — Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, Hydro Thunder Hurricane, Lara Croft and the Guardian of the Light, Limbo, and Monday Night Combat — are substantial enough to warrant the price tag.

Well, Harmony of Despair arguably isn’t, but it’s a co-op Castlevania game! As in, you get to kill screen-filling bosses with other people. Konami ripped this concept straight from my dreams. What’s more, I feel the need to support any and all 2D, console-based Castlevania adventures with my wallet.

Which of the five do you want?

+ E3 10: Eric Chahi returns to gaming with Project Dust By Admin 15 June 2010 at 2:00 am and have No Comments

E3 10: Eric Chahi returns to gaming with Project Dust screenshot

Eric Chahi might not be a household name to most gamers, but his seminal game, Another World (known as Out of This World in North America) is one that many folks have fond memories of. Project Dust may not be a household name for most gamers, either, but if you saw the trailer for it at the end of Ubisoft’s press conference (or above), you’re probably interested in it.

Why bring these two things up together? Because Chahi is developing Dust, a game that he calls a spiritual successor to Populous, and that is a very awesome thing. In a Q&A, Chahi described the game as a simulator in which players will use the elements (ground, lava, water, fire, plants, trees) to help their people resist, expand and migrate so they can accomplish their quest to find a safe place to live. You’ll basically be manipulating the earth in order to help your tribe survive. It looks damn interesting.

The game will be landing on PC, PSN and XBLA next spring.

In case the concept art below and the trailer above don’t whet your appetite enough, here’s one more fact: Chahi says that the other inspiration for Dust is Rez, because music will play a large role in it. I just mentioned Another World, Populous and Rez when referring to one game. It’s already a must-buy for me.

+ E3 10: EA Sports Live Broadcast shown for EA Sports MMA By Admin 15 June 2010 at 1:20 am and have No Comments

E3 10: EA Sports Live Broadcast shown for EA Sports MMA screenshot

One of the reasons that EA cited for introducing the EA Sports Online Pass was a desire to keep bringing innovative online features to gamers — features that cost money to develop and implement. At their E3 press conference, EA Sports president Peter Moore debuted the newest one: EA Sports Live Broadcast.

Chances are, you don’t have the physique to be an actual MMA fighter, but using Photo Game Face, you can create a fighter with your mug. Then, you can record a “hype video” — footage of real-life you, spewing trash talk into the camera — and hopefully, an EA Sports MMA community rep will notice it. If you’re noticed, then you have the chance to compete in fights with your created character for real prizes (such as a year’s supply of energy drinks — hooray!).

To top it all off, real sportscasters will provide live commentary during your match, which will be streamed on the Internet and watchable on Xbox 360s! (According to GameSpot, Live Broadcast appears to be an Xbox 360-exclusive feature.) It sounds pretty surreal, doesn’t it? Check it out in EA Sports MMA, due out on October 19th for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
