PixelNinja’s gorgeous Metroid cosplay will amaze you 29 November 2010 at 5:00 pm by Admin

PixelNinja is a favorite around Destructoid. She first mesmerized us and the Internet as a whole with her Samus Aran cosplay. Damaged, hurt and looking like a total badass. Since then, she’s kept up her Metroid theme by doing Zero Suit Samus and more recently her Varia Suit 2.0 and Gravity Suit costumes.

Simply stunning. A number of her outfits are just top notch, especially her Raiden tribute. Check out PixelNinja’s full collection of cosplaying amazingness over on her website.

+ Destructoid (the show): It’s a Minecraft Utopia! By Admin 29 November 2010 at 4:29 pm and have No Comments

Today’s episode of Destructoid (the show) is very special because it gives me the chance to show off all the amazing things that have been happening in the past 5 days on the Destructoid Minecraft server. If you don’t play Minecraft, you should. And if you do, you should be playing it on our server (unless you’re the griefer who lit our treehouse on fire, in which case you can suck it.)

In other non-Minecraft (and thus non-important) news, if you’re alive on the planet then you probably know that today is Cyber Monday. In today’s episode of the show, I break down the best video game deals for your dollar, while Holmes sheds a little light on some new Street Fighter IV characters and fan art. Later, I talk a bit about Mario Sports Mix and Nintendo’s weird milking habits. Then, to top it all off, Holmes does the last half of the episode in the nude.

Wait, what?

+ New Indie Game: The Movie clip shows Spelunky footage By Admin 29 November 2010 at 3:00 pm and have No Comments

New Indie Game: The Movie clip shows Spelunky footage screenshot

Make that footage from the Xbox LIVE Arcade version of Spelunky, which is beefier and less pixel-y than the long-since-released PC freebie; I was one character over the limit in the headline there.

In this latest slice of Indie Game: The Movie, we’re shown the new game in motion for the first time. But more importantly, we get to see designer Derek Yu talk about how creating games is like wearing a Half-Life headcrab at all times. He also hits on the importance of communities and the indie network.

As always, this documentary continues to fascinate. And it’s not even out yet. Be sure to go back through and watch past clips if you’re new to it all. I cannot recommend doing that enough.

+ Deng Ai, Ma Dai, Sima Yi, Jiang Wei in Dynasty Warriors 7 By Admin 29 November 2010 at 2:30 pm and have No Comments

The latest Famitsu scans are in, and they bring glad tidings for Dynasty Warriors fans. As well as the reveal of Sima Yi, we have four all-new characters introduced to DW7, including one I’ve been itching to get for the past five years. Yep, Deng Ai has finally been confirmed!

Jiang Wei is coming back, which is great news for those who missed him in Dynasty Warriors 6, and Ma Dai is finally putting in an appearance. As if that wasn’t enough, Zhong Hui and Guo Huai (who looks like Dani Filth) have been revealed as members of Jin. Interestingly, Sima Yi has been clumped in with the Jin faction too.

Looks like Dynasty Warriors 7 is really doing what it can to give fans some of the things they’ve been asking for. Now I’m off to high-five myself over Deng Ai’s inclusion … for hours

+ There was once space combat multiplayer in Halo: Reach By Admin 29 November 2010 at 1:00 pm and have No Comments

There was once space combat multiplayer in Halo: Reach screenshot

As revealed in Game Informer, Bungie at least toyed with the idea of expanding Halo: Reach’s space mission into a full-blown multiplayer mode. “We joked about it from time to time and even had a rough version of it working very early on in development,” says creative director Marcus Lehto.

“But the mechanics of it were pretty silly and we very quickly realized that the resulting gameplay experience wouldn’t hit the bar we were aiming for, nor justify the amount of work required. With so many features and so much content already committed, Reach was an incredibly ambitious project on an already aggressive schedule.”

That’s a fair point. Still, I’d be all about a Bungie-developed, digitally distributed space combat game should such a thing ever exist. Actually, they don’t even need to be the ones behind the project. I’d pretty much take whatever I could get at this point.

+ EA talks lessons learned from Dead Space, Mirror’s Edge By Admin 29 November 2010 at 12:00 pm and have No Comments

EA talks lessons learned from Dead Space, Mirror's Edge screenshot

Electronic Arts seems to have learned quite a bit about two of its more original games in recent years — Mirror’s Edge and Dead Space. I couldn’t tell you how many times those two have been brought up in interviews about the company’s future. Add another one to the list with EA Games president Frank Gibeau, who spoke with Develop recently.

“What I learned from Mirror’s Edge is that you have to execute, you have to spend more time on a game to ensure it’s polished, and you need to have the depth and persistence of an online game. There were issues with the learning curve, the difficulty, the narrative, and then there was no multiplayer either. The key learning from us was that if you’re going to be bold with that kind of concept, you need to take it as far as it can go in development.”

Dead Space was different,” he says. “It made money for us, but didn’t hit expectations. We felt like we had an IP that struck a chord, and one that hit quality, but again it missed multiplayer modes. So when we re-worked Dead Space, we looked at how to make it a better idea, how do we make the story more engrossing, how do we build Isaac as a character, how do we make this game a success online.

“But one thing I will say is that we won’t give up on those IPs. A new idea obviously has a lot of risk attached to it, but if you get it all right it can be huge.” I like his sentiment there at the end, but I’m not convinced adding multiplayer to everything is the end-all solution — or even necessary — in a lot of cases.

+ G4 gets exclusive multi-year coverage deal with E3 By Admin 29 November 2010 at 11:40 am and have No Comments

G4 gets exclusive multi-year coverage deal with E3 screenshot

G4 has basically bought E3 for the next few years, signing a deal that will grant it exclusive showfloor video coverage. Basically, they get a 24-hour live feed and everybody else can leave their video cameras at home.

Personally, I’m looking forward to the day that E3 just bans everybody else from attending and hosts the show in Adam Sessler’s kitchen.

LOS ANGELES, November XX, 2010 – G4 and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) today announced a three-year deal naming the network the official broadcaster for the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 Expo) through 2013. With this media partnership, G4’s team of gaming experts and popular on-air talent, including Adam Sessler, Morgan Webb, Kevin Pereira and Blair Herter, will bring viewers an unprecedented look inside the computer and video game industry’s biggest event with the high caliber coverage of the most important names in video games.

With over 24 total hours of LIVE broadcast coverage featuring exclusive news and original programming, as well as live-streaming events on g4tv.com, G4 will deliver the most extensive E3 Expo coverage and give gaming enthusiasts all the information and news they crave year after year.

“As the global epicenter of the gaming world, E3 Expo is one of the biggest and most important events of the year for G4’s audience,” said Neal Tiles, President, G4. “We are excited to have solidified G4 as the official broadcaster of E3 Expo for years to come and look forward to giving gamers a front row seat to all the big announcements, live news coverage and behind-the-scenes action.”

The multi-year broadcast partnership allows G4 to feature up-to-the-minute news and unparalleled on-air coverage to gaming enthusiasts LIVE from the Expo each year. Broadcast highlights will feature over 24 hours of LIVE coverage that includes a kick-off show, uninterrupted press conference coverage, developer interviews, hands-on walkthroughs and behind-closed-doors demos. With this unmatched level of E3 Expo news brought directly from the exposition floor, fans will never be left wanting.

“As we have demonstrated in the last five years, G4 is the only outlet that provides comprehensive coverage of an outstanding quality that both entertains and informs for the entire three-day show,” said Adam Sessler, host of X-Play and Editor-in-Chief of games content for G4. “With such reach, we can ensure that anyone who is unable to attend will feel like they are in the thick of the gaming madness from the comfort of their couch and with far less foot ache.”

Stay tuned to G4, g4tv.com, X-Play and Attack of the Show in the coming months to get the complete line-up of coverage for the annual expo.

How much damage has been done over the last few days? Quite a lot, I bet. If it’s any consolation, today is the final round of Steam sales — at least for now, anyway. That said, there’s some good stuff that won’t be easily resisted:

  • Aliens vs. Predator ($6.80)
  • Metro 2033 ($10)
  • Mafia II ($37.49)
  • DiRT 2 ($5)
  • Monkey Island 2 Special Edition ($2.50)
  • Peggle Deluxe ($4.99)
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic ($2.50)
  • Beat Hazard ($2.50)
  • Indie Air Pack: Altitude, Dog Fighter, Flotilla, Gratuitous Space Battles, and Plain Sight ($4.99)

As for gift packs, here’s what we’re looking at:

  • World of Goo 12 pack ($19.99)
  • Aliens vs. Predator 6 pack ($29.99)
  • Trine 8 pack ($19.99)
  • Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West 10 pack ($19.99)

I may need to have a friend hide my credit card until the day is up. I don’t need any of these games, but I want pretty much all of them. What’s looking good to you?

Those beautiful people at SEGA kindly invited Destructoid to visit their office. Being the good will Ambassador that I am, I decided to visit on Dtoid’s behalf. Why would SEGA want us to come to visit? They threw us a party to celebrate something really special that happened on Destructoid! Seriously, look at everything we have done for them in the past. As the most trusted man in gaming I am really honored that I was able to help forge a stronger bond between Destructoid and SEGA.

+ ‘Murder Your Maker’ VGA teaser rumored to be Prototype 2 By Admin 29 November 2010 at 10:40 am and have No Comments

'Murder Your Maker' VGA teaser rumored to be Prototype 2 screenshot

As we slowly trudge our way toward the Spike Video Game Awards, incessant speculation and rudderless gossip runs rampant. The latest biggie is the appearance of a “Murder Your Maker” teaser site featuring the back of a bald man’s head. Mysterious.

The site’s registered to Activision, and a fair few chaps believe that it’s leading towards the announcement of Prototype 2. It’s as good a guess as any, considering the game’s protagonist, Alex Mercer, does a fair amount of murdering and has a very literal connection to the word “Maker.”

While right now this is a case of people jumping to conclusions, we’re definitely overdue an announcement. Prototype sold pretty damn decently when it was released last year, definitely enough to justify a sequel. We all know Activision well enough by now to understand that if a sequel can get made, a sequel will get made.

A few weeks ago I actually asked Activision about a potential Prototype sequel but got a general “Nothing to announce at this time” line. All I’ll say is that I’d f*cking love a new Prototype, so yes please.
