There will be no Bat-Vehicles in Batman: Arkham City 28 November 2010 at 8:00 pm by Admin

There will be no Bat-Vehicles in Batman: Arkham City screenshot

Just because Rocksteady is taking the Bat off tiny Arkham Island and into the big city doesn’t mean that he’ll be taking all of his signature toys with him. In an interview with British gaming publication GamesTM, Director Sefton Hill has definitively stated that you will not be cruising for chicks in the Batmobile when you play Batman: Arkham City saying, ”There aren’t any playable vehicles in the game.”

That’s really comforting to hear. While I expect that the explorable environment in Arkham City will be larger than in its predecessor, the last thing I want is for them to divert time and energy away from refining what made the first game so great. There was a clear focus on making it all about what Batman was capable of doing in a space and I would hate to think that the next game could suffer simply because they felt the need to throw in a flashy car.

+ Games of the Week for 11/28/2010: Doing it as a goof By Admin 28 November 2010 at 5:00 pm and have No Comments

Clearly, you’re just not understanding my sense of humor. I goof a lot.

The Destructoid staff does not goof. They’re intensely serious people who do nothing but play videogames all week long, diodes strapped to their heads while the news is written to the page via a neural induction link. We’re from the future, playing your games in the past.

Read on to find out what we were up to this week.

Ross:  I have been incommunicado for a week, and that’s because I’ve done nothing except lay on the couch and drink and play video games.

Thanks to my full week off from work, I basically had completely uninterrupted gaming bliss for all of Thanksgiving. I completed Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood a couple days ago. As someone who absolutely hated the first Assassin’s Creed, and skipped AC2, it was pretty decent. Not the best game in the world, and there were some extremely questionable design choices, and some notable glitches, but I liked it enough to actually finish the game and not abandon it in despair. With single-player done, I’ve been playing multiplayer the last couple of days, which is surprisingly good. I do, however, hate the level system, given that high levels and the abilities that go with them are pretty much required to be effective at all. Now that I’m around level twenty, things aren’t as bad, but the initial levels were a complete exercise in frustration, and almost lame enough to make me give up on the multiplayer entirely. A party full of friends is also key.

After finishing Brotherhood, I also started playing Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. I’m not even a big fan of racing games, but Hot Pursuit is fantastic. The Autolog is brilliant, and is one of the best multiplayer innovations I’ve seen in a game in a long time. Haven’t even gotten a chance to check out the actual multiplayer yet, because we’ve all been too busy shittalking each other and trying to beat each other’s singleplayer times.

Razak: I was on vacation in Jamaica so all my gaming was DS related and Bond related. I played through GoldenEye and Blood Stone. Both were actually interesting, but not must-buys. I have to find someone to play the GoldenEye multi with at some point, but I doubt it will be that stellar.

Concelmo: Finished Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, which I thought got much better as it went on. I was a little frustrated that it didn’t really feel like a Castlevania game … until I got to the very end, after the closing credits. What a fantastic ending! I loved the twist that tied everything into the Castlevania canon. The game really needed that ending.

Also played through The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past — it’s a Thanksgiving tradition! And, yup, it’s still my favorite game of all time.

And finally, got some time in with Costume Quest (amazing!), Pac-Man Championship Edition DX (so amazing!), and Call of Duty: Black Ops (more amazing than I expected!).

So much videogame playing! Thanks, Thanksgiving!

Chester:  Finished TRON: Evolution, which I will talk more about it my review; played quite a bit of Nail’d; and had to play through the opening chapters of Castlevania LoS again because apparently that didn’t get saved the first time I did it a month or so ago… and neither did this second playthrough, I have discovered. You can save that game, right?

I will also continue my return to Donkey Kong Country as soon as my wife feels like playing again. (We are a team!)

Zimmerman: Still slowly working my way through Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. I agree with Ross on the multiplayer imbalance which is making it really difficult for me to progress in a game that I’ve already had issues connecting to lobbies in. A shame, really, as I love the base game but it’s just not playable for me in its present state.

I also played a little Katamari Forever on Thanksgiving, then left it on the menu screen for about twelve hours afterwards to enjoy the background music. And I played Minecraft for the first time on the Destructoid server. I built some things I don’t think anyone has found yet and am now probably done playing the game forever. My money wasn’t wasted, though, as I got a full day’s entertainment out of it and, more importantly, proved to myself once again that I was correct in assessing my investment level.

And I beat Hamza’s Zuma Blitz score, putting me back where I belong at the top of the Dtoid staff on the leaderboards.

Devore: Pretty much just Minecraft and Fallout: New Vegas. Oh how my eyes burn.

Aziz: STUPID FUCKING ZUMA BLITZ

Sarkar: I was all ready to kick off my five-day Thanksgiving weekend by playing Rock Band 3 for a few hours on Wednesday, but when I went to watch some not-torrented TV episodes on my PS3 on Tuesday night, my four-year-old 60 GB launch model died. (The issue isn’t the more common “yellow light of death,” but a blinking red power light instead.) After throwing a tantrum on Twitter — I was having a really shitty day already — I spent the rest of the week in Florence… in Assassin’s Creed II on my Xbox 360, that is. I’m enjoying the game very much, and not just in a “filling the void until my PS3 gets fixed” kind of way. It’s legitimately awesome, especially now that I’ve learned air assassinations, and now I really want to visit Italy in real life.

North: Gran Turismo 5. Over and over. Non-stop.

Oh, and I had the family over for Thanksgiving. Sony sent me a copy of kiddie game Start the Party, which uses the PlayStation Move. I put it in for my four-year-old niece, but it was fun enough that just about everyone played it a bit throughout the weekend. It’s pretty impressive for a game for kids. I also got my archery on in Sports Champions. That game scales from easy to way too hard too fast.

Bennett, C.: I’ve finally not downloaded Last Window: The Secret of Cape West (the sequel to Hotel Dusk) and it’s fantastic. I never play my DS unless I’m on a plane, but this game is so good I haven’t been able to put it down.

Toletino: I haven’t finished Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood yet either, but I agree completely with Jonathan about the leveling/progression system being totally broken. This is absolutely the last game Ubisoft wanted to put this kind of Call of Duty-like unlocking crap in, because the multiplayer is naturally unbalanced. Locking away so many potentially critical abilities for so many levels is insane and risks killing it off over the long term as new players give up in frustration as they get stomped by anyone who’s been playing longer.

The least they could have done was reduce the overall time it takes to level up. Brotherhood multiplayer could have used at least 20 less levels worth of progression. I’m already at 27 and I’m still getting hammered by players who earned Templar Vision and all kinds of other abilities that essentially negate anything I can do.

Holmes: Played a ton of Pokemon White on the plane. I love it.

Also caught up on some old Wii games that I have at my family’s house. It’s all sort of a blur, but I know I got a ton of green stars in Super Mario Galaxy 2, and that I tried to save that turkey from the cannibals of Animal Crossing

Sterling: Splatterhouse, which I reviewed and surprisingly liked. The Conduit, which is basically a 90’s shooter that is getting away with it by being “okay because it’s a Wii FPS that doesn’t completely suck”, and Postal 2, which is Postal 2.

Also replaying Lost Odyssey. That game is still awesome, although fuck the worm boss. I forgot how much of a dick that guy is.

+ Amazon’s Cyber Monday deals have started early By Admin 28 November 2010 at 2:00 pm and have No Comments

Amazon's Cyber Monday deals have started early screenshot

I was just cruising around Amazon, hoping to get a ken on what sorts of deals they’ll be having on games for Cyber Monday, when I found a bunch of lightning deals have already started and there’s some great bargains you’ll want to jump on right away.

You can nab Valkyria Chronicles II for PSP at $19.99, Bayonetta on PS3 for $15 and Splinter Cell: Conviction on Xbox 360 for fourteen bucks. And Front Mission Evolved is going to be coming up cheap very soon on all platforms.

I’d keep an eye on it, as the deals are likely to be pretty crazy all day long on Monday.

+ Billy Mitchell’s tie spotted in new Donkey Kong game By Admin 28 November 2010 at 1:00 pm and have No Comments

Billy Mitchell's tie spotted in new Donkey Kong game screenshot

Donkey Kong Country Returns is filled with little in-jokes and nods to Nintendo history. I thought the inclusion of Mr. Game and Watch  was sure to remain my favorite amongst them all, but I think Billy Mitchell’s tie might be the new King of (Donkey) Kong (Country Returns) Easter Eggs.

Oh f*ck, I’m going to Hell for that last pun. Was that even a pun? God, I’m sorry everybody.

But yeah, Billy Mitchell’s signature American flag tie from The King of Kong is in stage 3-2 of Donkey Kong Country Returns. As if I needed another reason to envy and despise Billy Mitchell, now he’s been referenced in one of the best 2D platformers ever made.

Good thing he doesn’t have a boss from Bit.Trip RUNNER named after him. Then I’d really be jealous.

+ Tim Schafer wants to make games for Nintendo consoles By Admin 28 November 2010 at 11:00 am and have No Comments

Tim Schafer wants to make games for Nintendo consoles screenshot

I’ve always been baffled by the fact that no Tim Schafer games have ever made it to a Nintendo console (that I know of anyway). The man’s irreverent sense of humor, general rejection of realistic visuals, and a focus on absurdity have always seemed like a good fit for Nintendo’s audience. I was sure that the alleged Brutal Legend Wii port was going to sell at least as well as the 360/PS3 versions. Turns out, Schafer might have been thinking the same thing, though his publishers thought otherwise.

According to Schafer — “Double Fine would love to make something for Nintendo’s fine machine, but it’s not up to us. It’s the publisher’s money, so they get to decide what platform to invest in. In other words, IT’S NOT OUR FAULT! I personally would have loved to make Psychonauts for the Game Cube. (Well, not literally me personally. I would have loved to tell someone else to make it, and I would have loved to watch them do it, and I would have loved yelling, “Faster! Faster!” as they worked.) I really hope we get a chance to make a game for the Wii some day. Why don’t you spam your favorite publisher with mail right now and ask them to send us money to make a Wii game?

Psychonauts and/or Brutal Legend port for the Wii and/or 3DS anyone?

+ Rumor: Oni Akuma and Evil Ryu in Super Street Fighter 4 By Admin 28 November 2010 at 10:00 am and have No Comments

Rumor: Oni Akuma and Evil Ryu in Super Street Fighter 4 screenshot

An alleged list of new achievements for Super Street Fighter 4 containing stuff from Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition has hit the internet. The list includes images of Yun and Yang (two characters that have yet to be announced for the arcade version), Evil Ryu (all shirtless and red eyed) and a glowing purple guy that looks a lot like Akuma. Internet people have already taken to calling this purple man “Oni Akuma” (Ogre Demon in Japanese), because one of the achievements correlated to his image is called “Birth of the Oni”. I like the name, so I’m rolling with it, though I expect some Street Figther fans will be irritated with me for that.

Speaking of which, a lot of folks are already calling this out as “definitely fake”, just like they did with the Street Fighter Vs. Tekken rumor, and multiple other Street Fighter related rumors that turned out to be real. There seems to be something about Street Fighter that makes a lot of its fans feel entitled to take on the role of honorary myth-buster. Why can’t they just learn to revel in the joy of a good rumor like the rest of us? Street Fighter 4 producer Yoshinori Ono sure can.

+ Hacked Kinect used to play Super Mario Bros. 1 By Admin 28 November 2010 at 8:00 am and have No Comments

Hacked Kinect used to play Super Mario Bros. 1 screenshot

Here’s yet another video of someone using Kinect to do something awesome. Using a PC and some custom-written code, this young man is playing Super Mario Bros. 1 with Microsoft’s new un-controller.

The controls look a little less responsive than a similar game featured on Wii Fit Plus, but still, this guy manages to do about as well in the game as I did the first time I played Super Mario Bros. 1 with a traditional controller… when I was about ten-years-old. From a gameplay standpoint and a hacking skills standpoint, that’s a good first start. I can’t wait to see what other uses hackers find for Kinect, and if Microsoft will ever put them to “official” use.

+ Need for Speed Autolog app crusing our way By Admin 28 November 2010 at 3:00 am and have No Comments

Need for Speed Autolog app crusing our way screenshot

We all know the real reason to play videogames these days and that’s so you can wave your arms around like a maniac compare your videogame skillz with your friends. The latest Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit knew this and that is why the developers put in the Autolog, a nifty little feature that lets you keep track off all your stats and compare them with all of your friends in an incredibly seamless manner.

But what if you’re out and about doing things and your friend is all, “Yo man, my stats be better than your stats when it comes to Need for Speed Hot Pursuit.” Right now all you can do is slap him upside the head for talking like that and then tap your foot impatiently and wait until you get home to prove him wrong, but according to the NfS:HP website you’ll soon be able to simply whip out an Autlog app on your iPhone and rub those stats and times in his face. If it turns out that your oddly speaking friend is ahead of you, the app will let you lay down a challenge that you can take up when you get home.

No release date for the app has been announced yet, and no word on it coming to any other platforms. If you don’t have an iPhone I guess your SOL.

+ Netflix’s multiple user interfaces explained By Admin 27 November 2010 at 1:00 pm and have No Comments

Netflix's multiple user interfaces explained screenshot

Had the chance to check out Netflix on your PlayStation 3? Most likely the answer is yes. In that case have you had the chance to check out all three versions of it on your PS3? Whether you knew it or not there have been three UIs running on the PS3 since launch and some people found that a little odd, especially since they’d randomly land on one every time they booted up.

Chief Product Officer Neil Harris doesn’t find that odd at all. When asked about the multiple UIs for Netflix on the PS3 he simply answered that the company was trying to get it right, and the best way to do that is test a variety of options. Sound like a perfectly good answer to me, though being able to choose my favorite one would make it even better.

What have they learned from their UI testing? Something almost anyone could have told them from the start: simple is better.
