Rev Rant: a clarification 06 August 2009 at 9:20 am by Admin

Rev Rant: a clarification screenshot

Every Thursday (or thereabouts), "Reverend" Anthony Burch monologues about games and gaming culture for a segment we call "Rev Rants."

However inadvertently, a lot of my rants end up addressing the idea of games as a uniquely expressive art form. There is — and I don’t have to qualify the following statement, because that’s why God invented hyperbole — effectively no one on the Internet who truly believes that games are not an art form, even if we’re just talking about the art of entertaining people.

There have been, however, a few instances of confusion regarding what is so artistic about games. If I say, "games are an art form," and you say, "yeah — just look at how beautiful Okami is!," then we’re not talking about the same thing.

Hit the jump for an (unfortunately text-based, as I’ve been busy editing HAWPs this week) explanation of what I’m talking about.

rere

When I say I’m of the position that games are an art form, I mean to say that when pared down to their most minimalistic aspects, games have a unique, medium-specific ability of expression that makes them different from (not superior or inferior to) other mediums.

This is why I brought up the Okami example before the jump. Okami is a visually beautiful game, yes, but its graphics have nothing — I repeat, nothing — to do with its belonging to an artistically unique medium. Making things look pretty is not a game-specific skill. The art style certainly has an impact on one’s enjoyment of the game, and it’s almost definitely one of the first things that pop into my head when I think about Okami, but I would no more point to Okami’s beautiful watercolor graphics to exemplify gaming’s artfulness than I would present the cover art for Abbey Road to show how uniquely artistic music can be.

I would point out the Magic Paintbrush Thing mechanic. I would point out anything interactive, anything that could not possibly be done in any other medium. Film, for instance, can be considered a uniquely expressive medium, thanks at least in part to the power of editing. Simply by juxtaposing images against one another, or letting certain shots go on longer than others, you can evoke a totally unique intellectual or emotional reaction compared to anything found in novels or on the stage (see: Eisenstein’s Montage Theory). Gaming has many unique powers like Eistenstein’s theory of montage (though the actual phrases being used to describe them vary from designer to designer), and to focus on things like pretty graphics or epic stories at the expense of realizing the uniqueness of gaming’s other aspects is to pretty much miss the point.

erere

This is why I’m also hesitant to hold up JRPGs as examples of artistic greatness, at least in the way that I’ve seen them championed by a fair number of people. Final Fantasy VI may have a cool story, yes, but is it delivered in a way specific to the medium? Or is it conveyed through long dialogue scenes and noninteractive cut scenes? I’m not trying to make some sort of qualitative statement about how good or bad JRPG plots generally are, but it’s worth noting that game narratives, at least as conveyed through many, many games across many, many genres, aren’t particularly unique to our chosen medium. Though you wouldn’t be able to experience the fun of leveling up and finding items (activities that are unique to gaming, and are thus worthy of recognition), a FFVI miniseries would be just as effective at delivering narrative as its source material.

The same goes for pretty much any game that doesn’t attempt to fuse story with gameplay in a medium-specific way, whether we’re talking about something as simple as increasing immersion by never leaving the protagonist’s viewpoint and providing environmental story clues (see: Valve, BioShock), or as far-reaching as allowing the player to determine where the story will go at any given time (à la Masq). Or, in getting rid of story almost entirely (Dwarf Fortress, Spelunky, the better parts of Fable II and Far Cry 2).

I more or less shat on "fun" games in my last few rants, but it’s worth saying that as a medium, games have the ability to deliver unique fun in ways that other artistic mediums can simply never touch. There is something artful in how unusually satisfying it feels to chainsaw a Locust in Gears of War. There is something aesthetically interesting about dicking around in Wii Sports or Bookworm Adventures that you can’t really get through other mediums. I’d love to see our medium use its expressive strengths in other directions as well, but "fun," and the unique dimensions it takes within videogaming, are unquestionable support for the idea that games can deliver unique feelings and ideas through unique avenues.

And if none of that proves they’re an art form, I don’t know what the hell to say.

+ Miyamoto helps promote Samurai Warriors 3, grins menacingly By Admin 06 August 2009 at 6:00 am and have No Comments

Miyamoto helps promote Samurai Warriors 3, grins menacingly screenshot

Shigeru Miyamoto showed up at a recent Samurai Warriors 3 event, which seemed random at first, but makes sense after a little digging. Apparently, Miyamoto was the producer of the Famicom Disk System title Nazo no Murasamejou, and Samurai Warriors 3 will have a mode based around that game. While this not quite a Nintendo/Koei collaboration, it’s pretty damn close. Crazy.

So yeah, Miyamoto showed his face at a Samurai Warriors 3 event, but what about the game? From what I’m hearing, it sounds amazing; 35 playable characters, over 40 enemies on screen (take that, Dead Rising:CTYD), and get this, potentially no motion controls. It’s still in discussion, but this game may designed to work only with the classic controller, with prerequisite classic controller bundle to follow. This is great news if you ask me. Some games are a good fit for the Wii not because they’re suited to motion controls, but for the Wii’s large install base and low development costs. Just as not ever DS game needs stylus controls, not every Wii game needs motion controls, as the sales of Monster Hunter 3 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl have proven.

OK, time to jump off my high horse. Hit the jump for screens of the game in action, and tell us what you think in the comments. Will this "hardcore" Japanese game sell on the Wii? Do you plan to give it a shot? And what the hell is up with Miyamoto’s shirt? It looks like it’s made out of lifesavers and gummi bears.

+ That was fast: DSi firmware 1.4J already cracked By Admin 06 August 2009 at 5:40 am and have No Comments

That was fast: DSi firmware 1.4J already cracked screenshot

Just last week we reported on Nintendo’s new Japanese firmware update, which managed to sneak in some flash cart blockery along with Facebook functionality. Several Destructoid readers shrugged off the block, stating with confidence that it would be cracked in no time.

They were right. Today, Kotaku has a video that clearly shows that DSi firmware 1.4J has been defeated. An R4 is plugged in and a game is booted in this video where the maker goes out of his way to show that it really works. And then the guy slams his DSi shut, for some odd reason.

Of course, this isn’t to say that the other flash carts work, but if they don’t, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before they do. And speaking of a matter of time, be on the lookout for firmware 1.5, so we can do this all over again.

+ The Witcher Director’s Cut price slashed on Steam By Admin 06 August 2009 at 5:20 am and have No Comments

The Witcher Director's Cut price slashed on Steam screenshot

Hey kids, want to see videogame boobies on the cheap? All you need is a Steam account, an awesome PC, and a passion for role-playing games. Easy, right?

According to Shacknews, The Witcher Extended Banana Director’s Cut is much more affordable. CD Projekt RED slashed the Steam price of the lauded RPG by 30 percent. The new price is $27.99, which makes the game a steal if you’re into The Witcher and really want to get your hands on the zany, nudity-version of the game.

The offer is valid until August 12th.

+ Shoji Meguro listed as a Persona 5 staff member By Admin 06 August 2009 at 4:20 am and have No Comments

Shoji Meguro listed as a Persona 5 staff member screenshot

There’s some of you out there (I won’t mention any names) that swear up and down that Atlus Japan is not working on Persona 5. Impossible, I say. They have to be. I’d bet anything that they announce it at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, set to go down next month. My basis for saying that? It’s all from my heightened fan-sense — I can sense production on a game, even over oceans.

Slightly more reliable hints that Persona 5 is in the works have recently been tied to pachinko game reveals. And now, another lead, this time from a Sony mobile phone site. As you can see above, Shoji Meguro is listed as the Persona 5 producer. While that’s not full verification of an upcoming title, it tells me that someone is working on it.

What’s even more interesting is that Meguro, who we know as the Persona series composer, is listed as "producer." Wouldn’t that be interesting to have the composer produce the game? If you played Silent Hill 4: The Room, you might know that Konami did a similar thing with series composer Akira Yamaoka. I’d be all for Atlus doing the same for Persona.

+ Red Faction ‘Demons of the Badlands’ not available (Update) By Admin 06 August 2009 at 3:40 am and have No Comments

Red Faction 'Demons of the Badlands' not available (Update) screenshot

According to Major Nelson, The first bit of downloadable content for Red Faction: Guerilla is available for download on Xbox LIVE Marketplace. The content, dubbed “Demons of the Badlands,” is a prequel campaign chapter to the core game. Years before Mason boots hit Martian dirt, the pointy-headed Marauders had violent contact with the EDF. In this chapter specifically, you’ll be seeking revenge on the behalf of the Marauders. The EDF has recently sacked their home and the Marauders are revolting against the chains of oppression.

It’s like the core game, except not.

The content is 800 Microsoft Banana Dollars and comes with more than just a new single-player campaign. Volition added seven weapons to the fold and created three fresh vehicles for you to use. One of them is the brute in the header.

We don’t have our hands on this yet and we’re interested in hearing what you have to say about it. How is the content? Is it worth the purchase?

[Update: The DLC is not available yet. You know, the one morning I decide to not fact check Major Nelson is when this happens. I apologize if I made you search for the content just to find if it wasn't there. It is slated to hit on the 13th Thanks for the heads up, guys.]

+ Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition will be limited By Admin 05 August 2009 at 6:00 pm and have No Comments

Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition will be limited screenshot

Infinity Ward doesn’t want to see the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition on store shelves or at a discounted price. Speaking to IGN, IW community manager Robert Bowling confirmed that the pre-order bonus — which includes night-vision goggles — is indeed limited. In other words, you won’t buying the sweet set of Modern Warfare goodness on Amazon for nickels in the future.

"We’ve already been asked by retailers to up the production numbers due to demand,” Bowling said, “which we immediately denied.”

"We decided from the beginning that we want this to be for the hardcore fans and early adopters. The fact that it is actually limited is one of the coolest parts, which is why we’ve individually numbered every copy."

Bowling added later that one run is all fans will get: "It was important to us that this be a true collectors’ edition and as such, we do one run, and it’s finished. The Prestige Edition is NOT something you’re going to be seeing on the cheap 2 months after launch."

The Prestige Edition is a bit of a running joke around the industry. We’ll be greatly saddened when we have to report that some kid stalked his girlfriend with help from the night-vision goggles. But we suppose there’s a chance that the dumb ones won’t be hopping on this bundle early enough.

[Thanks, ArticFox!]

+ Nintendo’s Game & Watch come back as Mini Classics By Admin 05 August 2009 at 5:30 pm and have No Comments

Nintendo's Game & Watch come back as Mini Classics screenshot

I lived in Japan at the time the Game & Watch craze was in full force. I’m not sure what happened to my beloved little games, but I played the hell out of them in my younger years. I guess that’s why nostalgia kicks in when I look at these Nintendo Mini Classics.

Designed to look like tiny Game Boy Color units, these Mini Classics are coming out with some of the old Game & Watch titles, like  Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong Jr, and Mario’s Cement Factory. Opposable Thumbs says that these little keychained games are available at retailers now, at prices between $5 and $20. $20? That’s crazy talk.

If they really wanted to cash in on our sense of nostalgia, they’d release it in the same form factor. I’d buy them up in a heartbeat. Otherwise, I think I’d rather have the DSiWare.

+ GameStop offering Champions Online pre-orders early access By Admin 05 August 2009 at 5:00 pm and have No Comments

GameStop offering Champions Online pre-orders early access screenshot

If you’re looking to play the full version of Champions Online before the MMO officially launches, then you’re in luck: GameStop just announced it’s “Early Start Program,” an exclusive bonus that grants pre-orderers the ability to rock out in Champions Online between August 28th and August 30th.

You can use this kick-start to get an edge against friends and foes or to see what kind of event Cryptic Studios can throw. You see, the program revolves around an event — one-time only, of course — dubbed the “Qularr Invasion.” During the course of the spectacle, you’ll battle the insect-like Qularr as they invade Earth. Riveting.

According to official release, the event will yield one-of-a-kind rewards that “will never again be found in Champions Online.” Sounds like a threat, right?

Champions Online launches on September 1st for the PC.
