Rumor: Dragon Age: Origins expansion in the works 31 December 2009 at 8:00 pm by Admin

Rumor: Dragon Age: Origins expansion in the works screenshot

If a seemingly oddball rumor holds true, it appears that Dragon Age: Origins owners could be devouring a huge slab of DLC in the near future. Something much more epic than Warden’s Keep or Return to Ostagar.

The Czech Web arm of Eurogamer is running the sexy gossip: according to the Web site, EA and Bioware are slated to announce a full expansion for the PC version of the game dubbed Dragon Age: Awakening this January. The content is said to feature a wholly new character, as well as a proper origins narrative, and at least 15 hours of additional play time.

Eurogamer.cz continues with the info drop, stating it believes that the content will drop in March and will cost around two-thirds of the game’s original price.

We’ve dropped a letter to Bioware to check the validity of this, but like proper people, the studio’s staff is probably enjoying the seasonal break. We’ll let you guys know when we get the answer. Until then, celebrate the fact that expansions are still being rumored in this era of micro-transactions.

+ Media Molecule rounds up the best LittleBigPlanet levels By Admin 31 December 2009 at 4:00 pm and have No Comments

Media Molecule rounds up the best LittleBigPlanet levels screenshot

While we’ve been off living our crazy lives, a dedicate community has been hard at work designing mind-blowing levels for LittleBigPlanet since pretty much day one. Developer Media Molecule has played all of the good, non-copyright-infringing ones and wanted to give props to the necessary guys and gals.

The 2009 Sackies, as they’re strangely calling it, gives recognition to the greatest LBP creations. It’s no surprise to see such levels as NeoGAF’s Little Big Contra, or that insane working calculator by Upsilandre, because they made headlines on most of the major gaming blogs upon public release.

Of course, there are videos to go along with the winners. You ought to avoid watching them if you hope to make anything productive in LBP ever again — they really are that good. Is it possible to indefinitely ragequit a game of this nature? I don’t see why not.

Voting for the year’s best level, which will be decided by you, hopefully after you’ve tried out every one of the candidates, is now open.

+ Already? Final Fantasy XIII now #4 on the Japanese charts By Admin 31 December 2009 at 3:00 pm and have No Comments

Already? Final Fantasy XIII now #4 on the Japanese charts screenshot

Do I need to get my eyes checked? Did Final Fantasy XIII, one of the most advertised, hyped games of the past four years, just get outsold by New Super Mario Bros Wii, LoZ: The Spirit Tracks, and that God damned “Miis make friends on the DS” game in only it’s second week of release in Japan?

That’s nuts.

Now, I know that Final Fantasy games aren’t known for their long legs, but to see the mega-budgeted, mega-advertised game get outsold so quickly by three games that likely cost one tenth of what Final Fantasy XIII cost to produce just confuses me. All this time, I secretly thought that the PS3 and Final Fantasy XIII would end up conquering all of Japan, and they defintiely did… for a week. To see the game almost get outsold by a months old Pokemon remake teaches me how little I understand about Japan.

Hit the jump for the rest of the Japanese numbers for the week of Dec 21st. After checking them out, riddle me this; does it make sense for Square Enix to spend so much more money to produce the Final Fantasy games that they used to if they don’t start selling more than they used to?

+ The most wanted PC games of 2010 By Admin 31 December 2009 at 12:00 pm and have No Comments

The most wanted PC games of 2010 screenshot

Our countdown of next year’s most anticipated games continues! So far you’ve seen the Xbox 360 list, the PlayStation 3 list, and the Wii list — today you’ll get to see what Anthony and I are most looking forward to for the PC.

Almost every year in recent memory has been a year where people have declared that PC gaming is dead, and every year it continues to do just fine. With some major PC-exclusive releases coming up and Steam’s continued success, it seems like 2010 is going to be another solid year for PC gamers.

Hit the jump to see what games have us excited for the new year.

 Jonathan Ross:

StarCraft II:

Starcraft II

I expect this is going to be on almost everyone’s list, and for a good reason. I played the original StarCraft constantly through middle and high school, and having gotten my hands on with the sequel a couple times, I already know I’m going to be playing this one a ton too. Blizzard consistently makes incredible games, and StarCraft II isn’t going to be any different.

Guild Wars II:

Guild Wars II

It’s a bit strange — I got the first Guild Wars the day it came out, but it didn’t really do much for me. Part of the problem, I think, was that I didn’t know anyone else who had the game. When Guild Wars II comes out next year, I know I’ll have a ton of people to play with this time. Seeing the trailers and reading some of the developer interviews for the game have moved it from my “Maybe I’ll Give It A Shot” category into the “Must Have” one.

Natural Selection 2:

Natural Selection II

What started out as a Half-Life mod is getting a full blown stand-alone sequel. A game that’s been relatively under the radar for a lot of people, Natural Selection 2 appears to be an amalgamation of a few different genres with its own unique twist. It’s got team based shooting, two leaders who play the game as an RTS, terrain transformation, and a whole bunch of unique classes that differ depending on whether you’re playing as the Marines or the Aliens. This might be the shooter that replaces Team Fortress 2 as my staple game.

Cyclopean:

Cyclopean

This is a game that was brought to my attention very recently, but I’m really glad I’ve heard about it. My token indie selection, Cyclopean is a turn-based RPG that draws from the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Based on what’s been released so far, it appears to be shaping up to be a game with some seriously kick-ass writing and an abandonment of tired RPG cliches. Like I said, it’s an indie game, so you’re not gonna be straining your SLIed 280s, but it won’t really going to matter what the game looks like if the writing samples are reflective of the final game.

Final Fantasy XIV:

Final Fantasy XIV

What can I say? Despite being disappointed by most Final Fantasy games since IX, I keep coming back for more. I know it’s irrational, but I can’t help myself. On the positive side, it sounds like Square is making some serious effort in fixing pretty much everything I didn’t like about Final Fantasy XI, so I’m still holding out hope. Will I be surprised if I don’t like it? Not particularly. Will I be buying it the day it comes out? Absolutely.

Anthony Burch:

Max Payne 3:

Max Payne 3

Yes, Max Payne 3 won’t be a PC exclusive, but I will be god damned if I play the third part of Max Payne’s gruff-talking, bullet-dodging, poor-exposition-delivering trilogy with anything other than a mouse and keyboard. As someone who is frightened of change in all its forms I harbor a healthy dose of fear regarding Max’s new look and locale, but I simply enjoyed the first two games far too much not to find my fanboy senses going into overload for a chance to hang out with everyone’s favorite sort-of-noir-but-not-really detective.

Mount and Blade: Warband:

Mount and Blade: Warband

The original Mount and Blade is still one of the deepest and most impressive indie games available today. That the Warband expansion looks to throw multiplayer into an already-satisfying experience is enough to get me excited. The strategic, realtime, large-scale battles of the first game seemed perfectly suited to multiplayer gameplay. Just imagine 64 players simultaneously hacking the shit out of one another with realistic damage and weapon physics, and you’ll get the idea.

Aliens vs. Predator:

Alien vs. Predator

Again, not a PC exclusive, but the first two AvP games had a great community on the PC, and I expect the franchise reboot will be no different (not to mention, it’ll have dedicated servers). AvP2 arguably suffered from species imbalances — the Xenomorphs were undoubtedly the weakest of the three factions — but in a world of constant patches and updates delivered automatically to your computer, the hopeful (read: stupid) part of my brain wants to believe that the new AvP’s multiplayer will be an even more polished, balanced affair. The campaign stuff was pretty good fun in the previous games, but AvP games tend to really take off in multiplayer.

Star Wars: The Old Republic:

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Everything I have heard about TOR seems to imply that it’s an MMO for people who do not, traditionally, enjoy MMOs. An actual storyline? Permanent choices? Combat that doesn’t involve killing rats for eight hours? If the game is what BioWare promises it to be, it may well be the first MMO I ever pay a monthly fee for.

StarCraft II:

Starcraft II

+ PETA’s most animal-friendly game of the year? The Sims 3 By Admin 31 December 2009 at 10:00 am and have No Comments

PETA's most animal-friendly game of the year? The Sims 3 screenshot

On this slow New Year’s Eve, we only received one press release. From PETA. The group wanted to spread the word about their named game for the most animal-friendly title of the year. It’s The Sims 3.

I’m just going to let this speak for itself:

In the latest version of the biggest-selling gaming franchise ever, Electronic Arts allows players to choose a vegetarian lifestyle. According to game testers, vegetarian Sims, like their real-life counterparts, live longer, age more slowly, and feast on cruelty-free delights—from tofu dogs to ratatouille. And, like all great art, The Sims 3 imitates life—if your Sim eats meat, it will get sick.

Hear that, Meaties? Eat it and get sick. Last year’s…award went to Fable 2, as in it when you ate fruits and vegetables you gained purity points, while meat gave you corruption points.

Tonight I’ll be corrupt and become sick, as I’m dining on pork chops for dinner.

+ Chinese Famicom Final Fantasy VII back on eBay By Admin 31 December 2009 at 9:00 am and have No Comments

Chinese Famicom Final Fantasy VII back on eBay screenshot

Take PlayStation RPG epic Final Fantasy VII, knock it down to 8-bits, translate it to Chinese, and then throw it on a cartridge, and you’ll have something like this somewhat collectible piece of crap. It’s got Advent Children branding, though it has nothing to do with the movie. That’s just how Chinese rip-offs work.

This one is in new condition, and has only been played once. A mere $2.25 could buy you one of the darkest parts of gaming’s history. I don’t expect that it will go for much. It would make a kickass gag gift, I think.

I love the screenshot above. Is that Cloud?

+ Holiday Steam sale: Street Fighter IV, Crysis, and more By Admin 31 December 2009 at 8:30 am and have No Comments

Holiday Steam sale: Street Fighter IV, Crysis, and more screenshot

Steam’s holiday deals haven’t become any less awesome over these last few days, and quite frankly, it’s exhausting. I don’t know how much more of my new life of blogging exclusively about videogame sales I can take.

This is what happens when everyone in the industry goes off duty; I lose my mind and you nice people go straight to the poorhouse after giving all of your disposable income to Steam and then some. Here’s the new set for today:

  • Medieval II: Total War - $4.99 (75% off)
  • Street Fighter IV - $9.99 (75% off)
  • Half-Life: Source - $2.49 (75% off)
  • Shattered Horizon - $4.99 (75% off)
  • Multiwinia + Darwinia - $2.99 (80% off)
  • Crysis + Crysis Warhead - $13.59 (66% off)

The only one in the bunch I’m not a huge fan of is Half-Life, mostly because you’d have to pay me to play the game. It has not aged well, in my mind. Street Fighter IV is great on PC, considering it comes with Sakura Kong. Crysis and Shattered Horizon: if you have the hardware, do it! Everything else? Yes please!

Do not click this link unless you are perfectly fine with eating nothing but ramen noodles for a while.

+ WiiWaa: A plushie deepthroating a Wiimote By Admin 31 December 2009 at 8:00 am and have No Comments

WiiWaa: A plushie deepthroating a Wiimote screenshot

WiiWaa. More like Wii Whaaaaat? WiiWTF is closer to my reaction after seeing this commercial.

WiiWaa is a Wii game that uses a strange plush creature as a controller. We saw a version of this product before, but I guess the video was pulled. Too kinky? I think the issue was that you originally had to stuff the Wii Remote up the character’s ass.

As you’ll see in this new video, a Wii Remote is stuffed down his throat to play WiiWaa. Not ass anymore. Throat. Nice save, guys. Quite graphic, I thought. Loved how slowly the kid slid it in. Horny basslines in the music round out the package.

Suggestive themes aside, this looks like a pretty neat idea. Waddle the plushie to have the matching on-screen character walk. Bounce him up and down and the in-game guy will bounce. Pretty nice graphics, I’d say.

So WiiWaa Looks Fun [Topless Robot]

+ Shenmue’s Nozomi cut from Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing By Admin 31 December 2009 at 7:00 am and have No Comments

Shenmue's Nozomi cut from Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing screenshot

Aw, that’s too bad. But Shenmue fans have had enough with the teasing anyway. Racing as the girl from Shenmue in upcoming racing game Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing would have been far too painful.

She was a contender, though, says Executive Producer Steve Lycett, who also decided to cut another Sega favorite, the awesome Segata Sanshiro.

“We built Nozomi, but she won’t be in the game,” says Lycett. “She was going to ride on the back of Ryo’s bike, but there was the small issue of where does she go when the Forklift appears.”

She was cute, but overall pretty worthless. Not the racing type. Sanshiro would have rocked, though.
