Battle vs. Chess hits shelves September 28 02 September 2010 at 11:00 am by Admin

After reading ou

r Battle vs. Chess preview, I know what you were thinking: “Who the hell is Tara Long?” and when can I get my hands on this fine original piece of software?

The answer to your first question is… I don’t know either. But she’ll be at PAX, from what I’m told, so find her and ask her. To answer the second question, September 28 is when Battle vs. Chess will be out for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Publisher SouthPeak announced the date in a press release this week, which sounds like it was written more for investors than press. Actual text from the release: “Classic Strategy Game Expected to Propel Sales and Achieve Profitable Margins.” What I would have written: “Old Stupid Chess Now Features Demons, Knights, and Boobs.” Not sure what they were thinking with that “profitable margins” thing.

+ First look at Mega Man Universe in action By Admin 02 September 2010 at 7:30 am and have No Comments

First look at Mega Man Universe in action screenshot

[Update: Don't like the look of Mega Man in the above video? It looks like 1UP and GameSpot also got their hands on exclusive Mega Man Universe trailers. They're all kind of the same, but not really... they each feature a different looking Mega Man. Can you spot the difference and figure out which Mega Man is from which series of games?

Thanks to the beautiful Russ Frushtick from MTV Multiplayer for the heads up.]

You know that weird-ass (and totally awesome) Mega Man Universe trailer Capcom revealed awhile back? Yeah, that didn’t tell us too much about the game. With this latest trailer, Capcom’s Keiji Inafune hopes to shed some light on what we can expect. It’s mostly successfully, but questions remain.

The gameplay in the trailer shows what appears to be a 2D-style platform/action game in the vain of classic Mega Man titles, but rendered with 3D graphics. Mega Man himself has a longer, slinkier look, but his abilities appear intact. The trailer ends with another tease, confirming that players will also be able to play as Street Fighter’s Ryu.

“Your world,” shouts Inafune in Japanese. “Megafied!”

Okay then. Mega Man Universe will be making some sort of appearance at PAX this weekend, so we hope to get more information soon. What do you think of what you’ve seen so far (including the fact that Inafune is wearing an Abercrombie and Fitch shirt)?

+ Of course RZA’s in DJ Hero 2 By Admin 02 September 2010 at 5:30 am and have No Comments

Of course RZA's in DJ Hero 2 screenshot

This was a given considering RZA has a Twitter account and likes to talk, but today it’s been confirmed that the producer-rapper will appear as an in-game character in the upcoming DJ Hero 2. He’s the final character announced for the music game, which also features Deadmau5, David Guetta, DJ Qbert, and Tiesto.

The Wu-Tang founder mixed and produced two exclusive tracks for the title: LL Cool J’s “I Can’t Live Without My Radio” mixed with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “The Message,” and Damian Marley’s “Welcome To Jamrock” mixed with Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth of Beethoven.” RZA is also quoted as saying some stuff in a press release Activision sent out today, and I urge you to read this in you head (or out loud) in RZA’s voice.

“I’m very excited to be involved with DJ Hero 2. As both a DJ and gamer from an early age, the game combines two of my passions,” he said. “I loved working with the team and am excited for the fans to hear the two brand-new mixes I put together just for this game. Bong bong!”

DJ Hero 2 is out on October 19; Activision recently revealed all of the tracks that will make the game disc, which tops 100 songs. Bong bong!

+ Many Spidey faces in Shattered Dimensions launch vid By Admin 01 September 2010 at 3:00 pm and have No Comments

Many Spidey faces in Shattered Dimensions launch vid screenshot

It seems like only yesterday that we were sitting here guessing which Spider-Men Activision would be stuffing into Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Now, the damned thing comes out next week — it hits Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Nintendo DS on September 7.

Ben gave you an in-depth look at the game on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo DS earlier today. Words and images are great, but there’s nothing quite like seeing a game. With that in mind, Activision have released a launch trailer for the game… even thought it hasn’t launched yet. I’m sure we’ll get another trailer next week, and they can call it “Launch Trailer 2: The Return of the Launch Trailer.” Who knows.

Game looks good to me, and I’m looking forward to getting my review copy, which should (I’m crossing my toes here) show up this week. But if it totally blows, I’ll be sure to let you know.

+ Free preview of Fallout: New Vegas comic on iTunes By Admin 01 September 2010 at 10:40 am and have No Comments

Free preview of Fallout: New Vegas comic on iTunes screenshot

If you’ve got an iDevice, fire up the iTunes store and download a preview of the upcoming Fallout: New Vegas – All Roads graphic novel. It’s free!

It’s a 12-page sneak preview of the graphic novel which will ship exclusively in the Fallout: New Vegas collector’s edition. Aside from length, the difference is that this is digital, and the one that comes with the collector’s edition can give you paper cuts. All Roads was created with Dark Horse Comics, and written by the upcoming game’s senior designer, Chris Avellone. Artists Jean Diaz, Wellington Alves, and Geof Darrow all help bring the bleak wasteland of New Vegas to life. Bethesda even says the graphic novel will contain “clues to in-games missions for the sharp-eyed reader,” so sharpen those eyes.

Fallout: New Vegas is out on October 19, and it’s the only game this year (I believe) that will let you have sex with robots. Read our most recent preview for more details.

+ Call of Duty: Black Ops beta imminent? (Update) By Admin 01 September 2010 at 7:40 am and have No Comments

Call of Duty: Black Ops beta imminent? (Update) screenshot

[Update: As reader Tom Davy points out, the above image has proven to be a fake. A beta for the multiplayer, however, does seems likely. Again, we'll keep you updated coming out of tonight's Black Ops multiplayer event.]

The aptly-named Leakerz.net has gotten its hands on what appears to be proof of an incoming beta program for Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops. The site has a number of images to back this up, including one screen of a PlayStation 3 user downloading the Black Ops beta client.

Further corroborating this story is a Google ad which the site spotted that mentions signing up for “the exclusive Xbox 360 multiplayer beta on September 1.” Community manager Josh Olin has publicly denied the legitimacy of the ads adding “As always, if I don’t say it, it’s not official.”

The leaked image of the PS3 download and the Google ad, which calls the 360 beta “exclusive,” don’t really jive. But today is the day that Treyarch is hosting a multiplayer reveal at its studio, so we’ll just have to wait and see what pans out. Our own Matthew Razak will be on hand, so keep watching Destructoid for the first info as it comes.

+ Valve has ‘three pretty big surprises’ over the next year By Admin 01 September 2010 at 6:40 am and have No Comments

Valve has 'three pretty big surprises' over the next year screenshot

Portal 2 coming to the PlayStation 3 with Steam support was Valve’s big E3 surprise earlier this year. It wasn’t, to most gamers’ dismay, the reveal of Half-Life 3 or even Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Hang tight, because there are more surprises in store. Three of ‘em.

“I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do,” Valve’s Gabe Newell told PC Gamer. “That isn’t going to stop any time soon. I’m just laughing because … people will be shocked again.”

“We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least,” he adds.

Valve has recently trademarked Defense of the Ancients, prompting speculation that an updated version of the real-time strategy games is imminent. And one has to wonder what Gordan Freeman has been up to these days…
