Kojima: Metal Gear Solid: Rising will ‘create new users’ 12 March 2010 at 3:20 am by Admin

Kojima: Metal Gear Solid: Rising will 'create new users' screenshot

Mad genius Hideo Kojima has been using his Twitter account to do what he does best — babble incomprehensibly about things and making the rest of us scratch our heads. The Metal Gear Solid creator has remarked upon a game we know next to nothing about, Metal Gear Solid: Rising, though what he says is typically vague and silly.

“The next MGSRISING,” begins the director. “This game will create new users, be developed by the new generation, a new MGS, but on the other hand, [Peace Walker] is made by Hideo Kojima, a new but classical MGS. PW is a new type of game design and experimental for future endeavours. So it is hard to say it will finish with one game … “

Most of that looks like the rambling of a nutcase (not helped by the fact that English isn’t our hero’s first language), but the general gist seems to be that Rising is an all-new take on the Metal Gear Solid franchise and aims to grab new fans, as opposed to the more traditional Peace Walker. Sounds fair enough to me. I can’t wait to play either of them!

+ GDC 10: Falling to your death: The Canabalt postmortem By Admin 11 March 2010 at 5:40 am and have No Comments

GDC 10: Falling to your death: The Canabalt postmortem screenshot

Canabalt is one of my favorite iPhone games ever. It’s very simple, yet so fun and addicting. Lots of other people think so too. Both the iPhone and free online versions have become a hit, garnering recognition from all sorts of places. That’s why creator Adam Saltsman and iPhone porter Eric Johnson were a part of GDC 10’s iPhone Summit this year.

There, before a crowd of convention-goers, they unveiled many secrets, and even made a really big announcement. If you love Canabalt as much as I do, hit the jump for the summary and get some insight.

They began the talk by asking the audience to name a game genre that they really enjoy. A few people spoke up with different answers, but ultimately, “platformer” was chosen. Curiously, Saltsman took a backseat at that point. He worked on… something all the while.

For the unknowing, Johnson described Canabalt as “a guy in a suit running from rooftop to rooftop during an alien invasion”. The game was made by Saltsman for an Experimental Gameplay Project, where the theme was “Bare Minimum”. That was why the one-button control scheme was chosen.

He then rattled off a few of the games that inspired Canabalt’s look: Flashback, Another World, and the first Prince of Persia. Screenshots of each were shown on the projector screen, and just looking at them, the influence was obvious. He loved the way that the first two games made complex looking environments using only a few colors. The main characters from these three games were heavily influential as well; like them, the main character of Canabalt moves very fluidly.

He also showed us examples of the bits and pieces the game’s visuals were built with. They’re pretty much Legos; they snap together in different combinations, heights and widths to create the various buildings you run across.

The level generation was inspired by the traditional “the further you go, the harder it gets” formula, which evolved into a speed formula; that is to say, now the game gets harder according to how fast you’re running. But they didn’t want players to be forced into that situation. The solution were the various obstacles the game randomly generates. If you move too fast, you can purposefully run into a box or chair and slow yourself down, thus lessening the difficulty.

The next subject was marketing. Though server costs got a little out of hand, having a free online version of the game available did more good than harm. It allowed people to try the game out before buying it, which was important because of Canabalt’s price point. Most iPhone games are 99 cents, but it retails for $2.99. So if they enjoy the online version and want more, they can buy the app and feel good about supporting indies. This philosophy worked well for them, and it’s something they look to do again with future releases.

There were also a few aggregators that helped market the game. From a single link on Stumbleupon, the website receieved around 190,000 hits over the course of a few days. Then there’s the advertisment help the game got from social networking. After death, the game will ask you if you want to post your score to your Twitter, and through those alone, over 50,000 hits have been generated. 115,000 units were sold in the first five months.

Johnson went back to the price point for a moment, and how it was a very controversial thing. A lot of people weren’t willing to spend more than the usual amount on the game, but the team seemed to have no regrets about their decision. “If you sell a game at 99 cents, you have to make the top ten list to sustain a company. Canabalt reached 36.”

They tried to see if a lower price point would help the sales of another game, but it seemed to have no real effect. They may not have even been able to try the $2.99 price point if they didn’t have the online version to act as a trial.Despite the higher price, the game sold relatively well, and has much less one star reviews (which usually only accompanied complaints about the price) than any top ten 99 cent game.

He then moved on to describing the more technical aspects of how both versions of the game came together. There was mention of Saltsman’s gamemaking tool Flixel, of course.  Anyone can quickly and cheaply make games with it, as evidenced by Canabalt itself; the Flash version was built in just five days. The iPhone port was similarly quick, taking only two weeks.

But this port was extremely dirty, so a bit of optimization had to be done. From the Flixel-to-iPhone optimization process came a new tool… Flixel for iPhone. To demonstrate how awesome it is, Saltsman finally spoke again. He had programmed a touch control platformer (remember the genre they picked out at the beginning?) in the half hour the talk had gone on for, and put it up on the projector screen for everyone to see.

It was awesome, as evidenced by my inability to end this summary in any other way. It was freaking awesome. Adam Saltsman is some sort of wizard.

+ GDC 10: Magicka in moving pictures By Admin 11 March 2010 at 4:57 am and have No Comments

It’s not hard to describe what Arrow Head Games downloadable magic-spewing action title Magicka is all about: it’s an isometric hack-and-slash fest minus the swords and the RPG elements. Giving you the perfect picture of what the chaotic game looks like in motion, on the other hand, is something altogether different. I thought this embedded debut trailer might help in that respect.

My understanding is that Sweden-based Arrow Head has taken Magicka on several European press rounds, so the above might be “ancient” by Internet standards. Please excuse us and make doubly sure to scream “OLD!” in the comments because people simply must know just how much time you put into the Internet each afternoon.

+ GDC 10: Sony Move Party girl looks like Amber Lamps By Admin 10 March 2010 at 8:00 pm and have No Comments

GDC 10: Sony Move Party girl looks like Amber Lamps screenshot

When I was watching Sony’s presentation for their motion sense enabled Move Party game this afternoon, I was kind of hung up on the person playing the game. She reminded me of someone, but I couldn’t put my finger on who it was. It was almost to the point where I wasn’t paying attention to the game.  I still haven’t figured out who she reminded me of, but for now, Amber Lamps makes a good stand-in. Can you see it? Maybe it’s the leggings.

As for the demonstration, this looks like a mix of EyeToy game play with a wand-style controller. You’ll see the controller take on other forms with some pretty slick overlays in the video. What you’re getting here is some casual, family style gaming. Swatting bugs, drawing triangles, shaving heads. What do you expect from something called Move Party? I appreciate that they’re showing off early Move tech, but I hope there’s something a bit cooler up Sony’s sleeve.

Maybe an Epic Beard Man fighting game?

+ AvP ‘Swarm Map Pack’ DLC coming next week By Admin 09 March 2010 at 2:40 am and have No Comments

AvP 'Swarm Map Pack' DLC coming next week screenshot

Rebellion will be releasing four maps previously exclusive to owners of the Aliens vs. Predator special edition as the “Swarm Map Pack” next week. Two regular maps, and two maps for Survival Mode will be included in the pack, set for release on March 18.

So far the DLC has been confirmed for Europe but North American details should be the same. The DLC costs 560 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live, which translates as roughly $7 on the other platforms. It’ll be available for all platforms.

That’s great … but maybe Sega should get back to us about replacing all the broken facehuggers it sold before trying to charge for more DLC. We’re still waiting to be told how to get new ones.

+ Get your face in Dead Space 2 for profit and glory By Admin 08 March 2010 at 1:00 pm and have No Comments

Get your face in Dead Space 2 for profit and glory screenshot

Visceral Games is holding a rad contest for Dead Space 2 that gives you a chance to come up with a hand-to-hand attack for Issac Clarke. From the sound of it, the gorier your attack is, the better. Anyway, ideas can be submitted in the form of video, art, or reliable old text.

The call for entries ends on March 26, and then the general public will get to vote on the ten finalists — as chosen by Visceral — throughout the month of April. Whoever wins this shindig will have their idea implemented; also, their face is totally getting put somewhere in Dead Space 2.

But enough from me — listen to the guys making the game for more specifics. And yeah, I kinda lied about the whole “profit” thing. Still, glory is a nice incentive.
